Conveniently located on highways 95 and 10, the little city of Savannah has been a weekend pit stop for travelers and tourists for years. The allure of drinking and dancing on the streets and relaxing on the beach are always draws when the weather warms up, but what draws the crowds when there is still the potential of bite and chill?

For its tenth year, Savannah Stopover has been a weekend haven for the growing music scene in Savannah. Cushioned between the heavy metal AURA Fest and the traditional Savannah Music Festival, Stopover features a mix of up-and-coming rock, country, and pop artists. Often times, Stopover is a weekend stop for bands and artists before heading west to Austin, Texas’s South by Southwest festival. This year, the festival runs from Thursday, March 5th through Saturday, the 7th.

In addition to over 35 new acts this year, the festival is also featuring an evening with New West Records, a spotlight on rising female stars in Americana and Country music, a special 10-year opening night reception, and a 10-year photography exhibition.

Over the past 10 years, Stopover has featured the beginnings of many musical artist’s careers that have taken off. Grimes headlined in 2012, while Mac DeMarco was featured in the 2013 lineup. Athens-based indie pop band Of Montreal headlined the festival twice, in 2013 and again in 2018.

Among the touring artists and bands, there are also 8 local acts rounding up the 2020 lineup.

Avril Lavigne died in 2003. The girl now living the life of Avril is really named Melissa.

Here’s how the story goes:

In 1998, Avril was discovered during a singing contest and quickly snatched up and away to create the next big star. She leaves behind all her friends to start a career as a singer, and in 2001, signs a million-dollar contract with L.A. Reid.

In 2002 she released her debut album, Let Go, and became the idol and spokesperson to angsty skateboarders everywhere. She was an icon with her stick-straight hair, dark eyes, baggy pants, and the infamous neckties.

However, life for Avril wasn’t easy after her debut. She had pressure to release another great album to follow up and was also dealing with the loss of her grandfather.

The story could go two ways here, depending on your source:

Some claim that Melissa, the double, came in to appear as Avril publicly as she dealt with work and family, but then after Avril’s death, stepped in full time.

The other story is that following Avril’s death, her record company searched for a look-alike to take her place and found Melissa.

Under My Skin was the first album released following Avril’s death. Fans claim that some of the songs were Avril originals, while others show Melissa’s influence coming in.

Around this time as well, fans begin to notice differences in “Avril’s” appearance. She begins lightening her hair to a true dyed blonde, rather than the dark blonde. She styles her hair in a more feminine, wavy look, not the overly-straightened style. Fans notice that she starts wearing dresses and skirts on the red carpet. Long gone are the skater days. Avril now looks like the cutesy-goth section of Hot Topic.

Even more so, fans online begin pointing out the physical differences in Avril. Moles on her arms are gone completely, as well as on her face. The biggest difference people say is her nose, which is a completely different nose.

There are also claims that Melissa is slightly shorter than Avril, but in my professional opinion, this one is pretty hard to sell without real measurements.

There is also this weird photoshoot in which she poses this “Melissa” written across her hand.

Pretty weird, but it is hard to find when this photoshoot happened originally, since this photo is on every conspiracy site now.

Avril or Melissa did shut down the conspiracy last year in a radio interview, saying it was “silly people think I’m dead.” Would the real Avril say “silly”?

When asked about this conspiracy now, she only points out how ridiculous it is because “I’m right here.”

So, is Avril alive or not? Who really is Melissa? And despite all of this, who at her record company thought “Hello Kitty” was a good idea???? Some question may never get answered.

Many of SCAD’s students, alumni, and professors have teamed up to make the world’s first virtual reality musical movie.

“Say It With Music” is the story of Simone, a waitress who uses music to make her stressful restaurant job manageable. Along the way, she finds a connection with another waiter, Nathan, who also shares her passion of music. The story is inspired by Irving Berlin’s “Say It With Music”.

With virtual reality, the musical is able to be experienced in full 360 degree view. This allows for more than one story line to be developed at a time to view.

More than 17 programs of study were involved in the making of the movie, including film and television, animation, costume design, dramatic writing, production design, visual effects, themed entertainment design and motion media design.

The use of virtual reality was a middle ground of film and theatre, both on the screen and in reality. To make it work, the right kind of storyline had to be used. The technology team built their own camera rig so to be able to capture very angle of the shots.

“Say It With Music” was filmed in Savannah, taken in one shot at the SCAD restaurant, The Gryphon. The cast and crew involved more than 100 people.

Extensive postproduction was needed to make all the camera shots match up and create a perfect 360 degree image.

To find out more about “Say It With Music” and the whole process that created a virtual reality movie, head over to www.scad.edu/say-it-with-music.

With the SCAD talent show fast approaching Saturday night, SCAD Radio sat down with with Liz Rodgers, who will be this year’s emcee.

Liz is a performing arts major, so being in front of a crowd is something that she is all familiar with. However, that didn’t calm her nerves the day of auditions.

“So many people were there,” she said.

For her audition, everyone had to perform a one minute monologue. If they wanted, could show some talent of their own. Because Liz is also a singer, she used her vocal skills to wow the judges and got the part.

This year, there is a wide variety of acts for the show. Many singers and musicians, along with comedians, dancers, a puppeteer, and many more.

“I’m excited to see all the original work,” said Liz. She has seen some of the acts already in small parts, and has been very impressed. However, the talent show will also be her first time to see everyone on stage.

The job of the emcee is to fill the spaces between acts. The emcee will engage with the audience, to have conversations and be funny. Liz has a few tricks up her sleeve to make her experience as an emcee an original one.

“There will be a lot of costume changes,” she said laughing.

The talent show is Saturday night, April 21st, 7 p.m. at the Trustees Theatre. It is being hosted by SCAD Student Actives Council. To find out more about the talent show and other events being held by SAC, you can head over to their Facebook page.

From all of us at SCAD Radio, we wish Liz and all the talent show contestants the best of luck!

Student Activities Council is hosting the SCAD Talent Show on April 21st, so we have the opportunity to sit down with Dan Hentschel, one of the performers, so get to know him and his talent better.

Kendall Shepard: I saw that, you’re a comedian, correct?

Dan Hentschel: Apparently. That’s what they say.

[Laughs] That’s what your talent is.

That’s what I’m doing, yeah. Stand-up comedy.

Okay, so you do stand-up…

Sometimes.

[Laughs] Sometimes? What has inspired your stand up? Like anything particular in your life?

Well, a lot of times like I really want attention.

Okay. [laughs]

And also, its therapeutic to have a mental breakdown in front of a bunch of people. And have them accept it, you know what I mean. And if it’s funny, that’s the key, that you kinda have to make it funny, or otherwise it’s awkward. But it’s fun, its cathartic.

So, a little background information: what’s your major?

I’m a dramatic writing major.

And how do you tie that into your comedy, or into your writing in comedy?

It’s all about the writing. I think a lot of people say they want to do stand-up and not prepare anything or not think in terms of like structure, but that’s a really important part of it. If the structures not there and it doesn’t make sense, people kind of intuitively pick up on that. It’s harder for them to know what’s going on.

Where are you from?

I’m from Baltimore, Maryland.

And do you ever do jokes about Baltimore?

Oh, yeah. I love to do stuff about Baltimore. I mean, it’s so shitty. Oh sorry, I probably can’t say that. [laughs] It’s such a wonderful place. [laughs] There’s a lot of material.

Okay, and do you ever do jokes about college, about SCAD?

Yeah, that’s nice because if you’re ever performing for SCAD student, then it’s always like relatable and it’s fun to like talk about things that everybody gets and can relate to. I put a spin on it, because a lot of it too is like putting into words what everybody thinks but never really thinks about consciously.

So, will the talent show be your first time being on a stage doing this? Do you do stand-up here in Savannah? Do you do stand-up back home?

I did the talent show last year, so I had some practice here. And I’ve done some stand-up. I’m the vice-president, I’m a really bad vice-president, but I’m the vie-president of Stand-Up Comedy Club at SCAD, S.U.C.C. as we otherwise abbreviate it. [laughs] If you want to come to that, that’s Sunday’s at 7 p.m. at Crites Hall, room 415. That’s a whole bucket of fun. And I’ve also done it at bars around town and stuff, but that’s kinda scary. I don’t really do it a lot, so that’s why I’m not like respected by the stand-up community, but that’s fine.

You have anyone who really inspired your comedy. Like who do you watch when you want to know how to improve your own stand-up?

Well I used to really like Louis C.K., but unfortunately, you can’t really say that anymore. He’s a bad man, so… I say my favorite is John Mulaney, he’s amazing. I really like Amy Schumer, I know a lot of people don’t like her, but I really do. Mike Birbiglia, Michelle Wolfe is really good.

So, these questions are more fun…

Ohh, more fun.

Do you remember the first joke you ever told?

Oh my god, ever? You mean as part of stand-up or…?

Just the first joke you ever told your whole life.

[Laughs] Uh, it was probably… a lot of it… I try to think about it a lot and trace it back. Like, getting bullied in elementary school. I started to try to pretend, like people were laughing at me, I would sort of try and pretend it was on purpose and I was like “Ha! I’m in on it! Just kidding”. So, it was probably something like that where people were like “You walk funny” and I was like “Just kidding! I’m doing it on purpose!”. It’s all an act, that’s my whole life. [laughs]

Do you remember the first joke you ever did as stand-up?

Well actually, the talent show last year was the first time I ever did it, ever. So, I think the whole premise of that one was like talking about medication and stuff and I said that I was on Zoloft, so I said like antidepressants are like trying to bake a cake by burning your whole house down. [laughs] And people thought that was really relatable.

So, I only have one more question: Because we are SCAD Radio, we’re into music, if your comedy was a music genre, what music genre do you think it would be?

It would probably be like that ambient alternative music that’s just like the sound of a dishwasher for 19 minutes. [laughs]

Lo-fi dishwasher sounds to study to.

Exactly, yes.

Awesome, well thank you. Is there anything else you want to add?

I hope you all come to the talent show, next Saturday. Support SAC, they’re really great. Come to all their stuff.

Thank you so much.

Thank you, I really appreciate it.
