With finals just around the corner, one way to “destress from the test” is to watch some of the eye-catching films that were featured in the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. One amazing film that premiered here at the film fest was George Tillman Jr.’s The Hate U Give.

TheHate U Give gets its source material from the book of the same name written by Angie Thomas. She based the content of the young adult novel off rapper Tupac Shakur’s philosophy T.H.U.G L.I.F.E., that stands for The Hate U Give Little Infants F*cks Everybody. T.H.U.G. tells the story of Starr, played by SCAD Rising Star Award honoree Amanda Stenberg, and the actions she must take after witnessing her childhood friend being shot by a police officer. After attending the film myself, I can tell you there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience. This film, along with many other SCAD Film Festival films such as Monsters and Men and BlacKkKlansman touched upon race. It gives people the opportunity to have conversations like the ones presented in the movie, despite their racial or social views.

After the screening, movie-goers were able to attend the Q and A with Amandla Stenberg as she informed the crowd about her process of getting ready for the film, getting in touch with her character, and what it meant to be a person of color in society. The 20-year-old actress even discussed the term “code-switching” and how she felt about the audience response to the movie.

“We wanted you to cry”, said Stenberg. “It means you were listening”.

As someone who read the book before seeing the film, I am so glad that the movie stayed true with its original content, all while still providing new material for its story and characters.

You don’t need to be white to see this movie, you don’t need to be black to understand this movie, you don’t even have to agree with this film. What you need to do is open your mind and look at the world around you and decide whether you’re fine with living in a one-sided society or are ready for a change to start happening.

If the answer is yes to either of those questions, then go to the nearest movie theater and pick up a ticket for The Hate U Give.

You won’t regret it.

Over the past few years Netflix, has blessed us with amazing shows like 13 Reason Why, Stranger Things, and Orange is the New Black. In March of 2018, one of the best show has come across my television in months: On My Block.

On My Block is a coming-of-age comedy drama about four funny, street-wise friends who must deal with the complications of relationships, high school, and the rough streets of Los Angeles.

The setting takes place in a Latino populated community, where the group of friend’s favorite pass time is guessing what kind of gunfire is being roared through the streets.

OMB talks about important issues that take appearance in many urban communities without having the scene to feel like a sitcom’s “Very Special Episode.”

The cast includes Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Stuck in The Middle‘s Ronni Hawk, and Liv and Maddie‘s Jessica Marie.

The show has great storylines, excellent character development, and some of television’s most memorable music.

OMB’s soundtrack consists of music from RAYANA JAY, KIRKO BANGZ, DEJ LOAF, RUSS, KHALID, and more!

One of my favorite songs on the series, “Changes” by DEJ LOAF, gives a sort of “jazz-y” Latin vibes with its eccentric horns and animated tempo.

If you want a great show this summer to watch with even greater music On My Block is the perfect choice.

Atencion! Atencion!  SCAD’s Alpha Psi Omega and Multicultural Alliance Theatre bring you their take on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights!

In the Heights is a musical set in the course of three days, taking place in a Hispanic American community in Washington Heights, New York.

Playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is known for his smash-hit, Hamilton, first constructed the popular stage play in 1999 but didn’t get the spotlight it deserved until 2005.

The show has been praised for its hip hop and Spanish-infused musical numbers, exciting and authentic dancing, mixed with its amazing multi-cultural ensemble cast! The show and the cast has won many awards, including a Tony and Pulitzer for their album based off the music from the show.

Personally, In the Heights is one of my favorite Broadway musicals because of its sound and heart.

As a person of color, I know how beautiful it is to see your cultural incorporated on a screen or even a stage, however, you don’t have to be Latino, or even a minority, to be inspired by the show-stopping play.

These SCAD students have been working hard for weeks just to bring this astonishing Broadway-adapted play to our school. The cast includes unique individuals who are honestly one of the best group of performers I’ve ever seen.

Check out the musical on May 11-12 at Arnold Hall. Admission to the show is $1.

It’s been over a month since Marvel’s most anticipated featured film of 2018, Black Panther, first premiered in theaters. If you haven’t fell off the face of the Earth for the past several months, then you know that this movie has been on everyone’s must watch list ever since the trailer reached the Internet in early 2017.

Audience members were captivated by the star-studded cast and the beautiful scenery that presented themselves in the trailer before the box office even had time to put a price on the tickets. All of these things were great, but the true star of the movie was when the soundtrack dropped on February 9th.

The soundtrack was curated by Kendrick Lamar with the help of others also signed to Top Dawg Entertainment. The soundtrack features other stars such as The Weeknd, SZA, Travis Scott, and Zacari.

Like any fan of the M.A.D.D City artist would say: “You know it’s lit when Kendrick producing the soundtrack!”

Although I love the Compton Prince himself, he’s not the only musician whose songs have us excited for the film. Recording-duo Run The Jewels’ song “Legend Has It” is basically BP‘s theme song. It can be heard throughout its trailer. The song is most recognizable from the famous line at the end of the trailer, “step into the spotlight”. The song has a great tempo, awesome beat, and one of the hottest rapping styles of the Run The Jewels duo, Killer Mike and EI-P, that’ll leave you speechless.

The video for “Legend Has It” plays with the theme of being guilty before proven innocent. If that doesn’t give you a feel on how awesome the song is I don’t know what will.
