This week’s book of choice was the first in a trilogy of fantasy novels, “Caraval” written by Stephanie Garber. The plot follows a young girl, Scarlette, and her sister, Donatella, as they attend the infamous, interactive magic show of a lifetime: Caraval. The event takes place over five days, in that time Scarlette must find her sister and return home so she can marry her fiancé and escape her father once and for all. However, the illusions and misleading characters create obstacles for Scarlette and her new companion Julian to overcome. As the reader, we get tangled in the complicated web alongside them, and what better way to put ourselves in the story than music?

  1. Carousel – Melanie Martinez

The first, and most apparent, song I needed to add to this playlist was “Carousel” by Melanie Martinez. Not only does it perfectly adhere to the premise of the novel, but it captures the mysterious atmosphere of the setting. Caraval is a place of illusionists and trickery, yet Scarlette finds herself at a frequent moral crossroads that get in the way of her mission to find her sister. Love, violence, and red herrings can make the reader’s head spin, making “Carousel” the perfect eerie accompaniment.

  1. Gods & Monsters – Lana Del Rey

One of the oddest, most secretive characters in the book is Legend, the man who created Caraval. From the beginning, he is a nameless, faceless character that we are only given fractions of details about. He is by far the most compelling, though, as it is his actions and influence that propel the story forward. Legend is referred to as God-like as he sees everything and is capable of throwing the participants into chaos. A twisted, morally gray character like Legend can be summed up as being one with “Gods & Monsters”.

  1. Savages – MARINA

Throughout the piece, the characters are stripped down and revealed to be so much more than who they present themselves to be on the surface. The lyrics of “Savages” reflects how our impressions of the characters are proven false, that they are layered and complex. Motivations that drive them are, more often than not, selfish as they drag themselves through every game and trick. Participants, observers, and those employed by Legend have the duality of being generous as they offer help while simultaneously setting her back for their own benefit.

  1. I Found – Amber Run

What’s a fantasy book without a touch of romance? Of course, the romantic subplots are usually intended to contribute higher stakes to the storyline and Caraval meets expectations. A predictable couple from the start to everyone but themselves, Julian and Scarlette meet by supposed chance, and, in her search for Donatella, they are thrown together over and over. The pair work together and thus grow to more than tolerate each other as simple care transforms into affection, Amber Run captures all of the intensity of their feelings in the song “I Found”.

  1. Moments In Love – The Art Of Noise

“Moments In Love” is a song that is ten minutes in length, yet I lost track of time listening to it as I read. The fluid build of intensity paired with the rhythmic flow combines for a hypnotic collision of sound. Minimal lyricism that borderline fades into the instrumentals submerges the listener into an immersive experience alongside the characters as we read. The disruptions of peace juxtaposed by glittery effects transport you into Caraval.

I decided to take on an exciting read this week entitled “Bunny” by Mona Awad. A brief synopsis: College student, Samantha Heather Mackey, attends university as a writing student when four of her girlish, hive-minded peers invite her into their clique– a cultish drug-psychosis-induced gathering– where Samantha’s perception of reality and delusion begin to blur. Throughout my time reading this delectable novel, I comprised a playlist of songs to read along to. Here are my top five picks from the playlist that summarizes the compelling, grotesque story Awad puzzles together.

  1. (You’re The) Devil in Disguise – Elvis Presley

The lyrics of this song almost entirely capture the perception Samantha has of the “Bunnies”, especially at the beginning of the piece. As she describes the four girls, as they seem almost dream-like in the most horrifying context. The rhythm and lighthearted pace of the song don’t mirror the lyrics, which leaves the listener feeling conflicted; similarly, the reader feels conflicted as the girls are depicted in the story.

  1. Wuthering Heights – Kate Bush

Yes, this song is directly referenced in the book, which is why it deserves a closer look. The whiny, breathy vocals are cacophonous and borderline disorienting. It is for this reason that makes it is so unique and inherently applicable to the content of the book itself. Bush seems to be fighting with some hypothetical counterpart, perhaps even herself, effectively becoming a reflection of Samantha’s state of mind through the progression of the story.

  1. Tia Tamera – Doja Cat (feat. Rico Nasty)

An outlier, seemingly so, yet equally as adherent to the storyline as the aforementioned songs. “Tia Tamera” is hard-hitting, yet immersive in its auditory resonance. This particular song came on shuffle as I was listening at the perfect moment, an unexpected unity as I read about the bunnies’ “Smut Salon”. Of course, as most plots involving cult-like gatherings do, “Bunny” had a consistent mention of drugs. The “woah”s backing up the vocals of the track somehow embodied the feeling of intoxication alongside the bunnies to a T.

  1. Exile – Taylor Swift (feat. Bon Iver)

In stark contrast to the previous song, “Exile” is representative of the intense shift between the first half and second half of the novel. There is a sense of unrest, yet a quiet somber quality to the writing as Samantha comes to her senses. Without giving any spoilers, let’s say that she has a rude awakening to her actions. Her temptations guided her to a tough spot that she struggles to dig herself out of. She succumbs to the pressures of her peers, yet remains on the outside. Samantha is, quite literally, an exile.

  1. Secret – The Pierces

If you’ve watched the teen drama of the century– a personal bias, Pretty Little Liars, you’re familiar with this track. It is famous for its enchanting rhythm and simplistic yet compelling lyricism. As the book begins to wrap up, a resolution is beginning to construct itself. However, Awad ensures that the reader is left questioning their perception of the novel. It is an accurate summary of the reader’s thoughts as they conclude the piece, because how could we ever trust a narrator as unreliable as Samantha? It would be absurd.

Overall, I’d rate this read a 4.5/5. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and a strong recommendation. It was fluid, yet confusing– a true challenge to any reader who dares to comprehend the plotline. I adored Awad’s style and believe it to be a classic contemporary piece. The ending, however, is debatable at best. It is up for interpretation in order to feel as though the book is finished. A playlist, in my opinion, was essential through my reading of the story as I felt the desire to be fully surrounded by the narrator’s world.

When the novel coronavirus sent our lives into upheaval in the early months of 2020, people around the globe faced the effects of isolation. Despite the knowledge that social distancing, quarantining, and all other preventative measures are for the health and safety of everyone around us–including loved ones–humans are social creatures, and it’s extremely difficult to maintain composure under these continually distressing circumstances. Some turned to breadmaking, others to memes–even music came to be a coping mechanism.

Although exploration of current favorites and discovery of new artists was bound to happen, quite a few people returned to childhood obsessions during these unprecedented times. The troublesome times that we’re all enduring led many down the path of nostalgia–longing for a better time and transporting themselves to it via song. The benefits of listening to music are widespread–from reducing anxiety to quelling physical pain, and the combination of those effects and the desire to get lost in another time created the perfect storm for people to return to their childhood or teenage favorites.

Personally, this meant digging into the depths of my Spotify playlists. Unbeknownst to me, most playlists I’ve created are a pretty good mnemonic device for the time of life that I made them in. With the click of a button, I can recall a joyous period where everything seemed to be going right. Or, I can return to a low point to remember that I did, in fact, get through that dark moment, and maybe, just maybe, I can make it through this one. Songs, playlists, albums, and the memories attached serve as an auditory scrapbook for the intangible and unrecordable emotions that define our experiences. With a limited amount of new stimuli going on in our pandemic lives, it’s easy to seek comfort in the familiar, and music provides an easy way into that.

On the industry side of things, smaller musicians continue to struggle to make ends meet with the loss of touring revenue. Even for well-known musicians on independent labels, most of their revenue comes from tours rather than album or merch sales, especially in the age of streaming services. To quell the financial distress of the pandemic for musicians, Bandcamp, a platform between a streaming service and a music storefront, offered a solution. In March, they had a “Bandcamp Friday” where the service fee was waived and all money spent went directly to artists. Intended as a temporary solution, it proved to be a popular event and became a monthly occurrence.

Many artists who are in a secure financial spot (a feat of grand proportions with our current circumstances) have taken to donating their earnings to good causes. Proceeds from Homeshake’s Haircut EP and Jeff Rosenstock’s 2020 DUMP have both gone to charitable organizations.

The pandemic has really put a spotlight on the importance of art and the act of creation. Making or creating art has become an outlet for so many during this time of crisis. Music especially can serve as a sanctuary–something so valuable in this time of strife. Check out the date for the next Bandcamp Friday here, and let us know what your pandemic jams have been. SCAD Radio has compiled a playlist of some of our favorite nostalgic throwbacks here

Halloween is fast approaching, and SCAD Radio is here to give you some haunting recommendations for the holiday. Enjoy some candy at home while watching and listening to these terrifying offerings brought to you by your favorite campus radio station.

The types of media are divided into three groups: Spooky, or the goofy, silly kind of Halloween themed fodder; Scary, classic stuff–it might give you a good jump, but nothing too haunting; and Genuinely Terrifying, which taps into feelings like existential dread and abject, skin-crawling horror. Tag us on Instagram if you try out any of our suggestions!

Music

Spooky: “Scare Me” by Ludo has an upbeat, 80s feel to it. The lyrics are full of playfully creepy imagery. It’s a guaranteed hit for an impromptu at home Halloween dance party.

Other Suggestions – “Addams Family Theme”, “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” from 30 Rock, “When He Died” by Lemon Demon

Scary: “The Hearse Song” is a perfect fit for this category. The Marshmallow Ghosts are a Halloween themed project native to Savannah, and this song is a perfect example of their October niche. It’s a perfect inbetween, with enough doom and gloom to be actually scary, but not quite panic inducing. The upbeat nature of the song helps, too.

Other Suggestions – “You’re Dead” by Norma Tanega, “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads, “Special Death” by Mirah

Actually Terrifying: “Zombie” by the Cranberries is a rare song that effectively conveys a chilling message in a poetic manner. Though most likely know the song for Dolores O’Riordan’s distinctive vocal delivery, there’s actually a deeply tragic narrative behind the lyrics stemming from conflict in Ireland.

Other Suggestions – “Western World” The Casket Girls

Check out the rest of SCAD Radio’s Halloween Playlist here

Movies

Spooky: Rocky Horror Picture Show – If you’re wanting to watch an occult classic with a “Sweet Transvestite” (played by Tim Curry, the man himself), a hit musical track, aliens, incest and sex, then Rocky Horror Picture show is the spooky movie for you.  -Anne Connor

Other Suggestions – Halloweentown, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Hocus Pocus

Scary: Psycho is an absolute staple of the horror genre. Audiences back in the day were surely given some nightmares after viewing this flick, but our modern sensibilities allow for a tamer reaction.

Other Suggestions – The Silence of the Lambs, Carrie, The Witch

Actually Terrifying: Green Room tells the story of a punk band trapped in a Neo-Nazi club. I know, that’s already some pretty scary stuff, and that’s only the barest of bones of the story. Patrick Stewart plays a chilling villain that reveals the true inhumanity that one can reach.

Other Suggestions – Hereditary, Get Out, Midsommar, Coraline

TV Shows

Spooky: Over the Garden Wall is a Cartoon Network animated miniseries that aired over the course of a week in 2014. This highly critically acclaimed show tells the story of two boys trying to find their way home in a beautifully animated manner filled with fall imagery. The cutesy creepy style makes it perfect to breeze through while enjoying some apple cider with friends.

Other Suggestions – Goosebumps, The Twilight Zone

Scary: The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is yet another Halloween-related cartoon that existed during the youth of millenial/gen-z kids. It revolves around the Grim Reaper and two kids who have him bend to their will. It makes it into the scary category by virtue of the psychedelic imagery and gross-out humor that the show indulges in.

Other Suggestions – Haunting of Hill House, The Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors

Actually Terrifying: Courage the Cowardly Dog is notorious for causing nightmares. Despite the main character’s appearance, Courage explores disturbing topics and incorporates genuinely terrifying villains on the regular. I definitely recommend this one if you want to reignite some childhood terror.

Other Suggestions – American Horror Story (depending on the season)

Visual Artists

Jon Macnair – Macnair puts a contemporary spin on the medieval likes of Hireonymous Bosch in his macabre tableaus. His work is full of human faces on animals as well, which is scary enough on its own.

Peo Michie – Annually, Michie illustrates Halloween-themed WLW pinup girls that are absolutely charming. They’re a really fun and unique way to celebrate the season.

Ramen Shaman – Ramen Shaman’s work generally consists of some fairly unsettling portraiture that is sure to get you thinking about the macabre. Who knows, maybe a distended face will show up in your subconscious sometime.

Youtubers

Defunctland – Kevin Perjurer hosts this amusement park themed youtube channel. On the surface there isn’t too much scary stuff going on, but a deeper dive results in some pretty chilling real life tales, specifically his Son of Beast, The History of Action Park, and the History of America Sings videos.

Bailey Sarian – Sarian’s videos bring together the worlds of horror and makeup in her true crime youtube series.

Ask a Mortician – Caitlin Doughty, author and actual mortician, has a youtube series that investigates death related subjects and answers common questions about morticianhood. She has a refreshing “death positive” position that is refreshing and helpful to those with existential fears. She also has a video covering Savannah’s own Bonaventure Cemetery!

Special thanks to all of the staff and volunteers that contributed to this article, including Anne Connor, Billie Redner, Savannah Mendoza, Mel Pezoldt, Maya Looney, Cher Shaffer, Jessica Clary, Hailey Feller, and Sarah Luongo.

Here’s our music director Hailey on her new picks for this week’s regular rotation:

Halfway into the quarter, we’ve started up our Youtube channel again! Now the Weekly Rotation will be up on Spotify and YouTube! In addition to the Weekly Rotation where all the songs will be listed–starting with the best and music videos, and finishing with some solely audio tracks–there is now a playlist for the “Top 10 Music Videos”. This list will be update more sporadicly. The list is curated and rated by me, Hailey Feller, who uses her best judgement to pick out the worthy contestants. The songs come directly from the Weekly Rotation as a new way of highlighting some favorites. They aren’t ranked 1-10, simply put here from what was first in the rotation, so to begin in no particular order, here are the songs on List #1:

“Kill the Sun” by Motherfolk is a song about time passing. This works perfectly with their montage of live performances. You can tell they love performing and playing music. Playing is a lot of hard work but there’s always time to goof off.

The music video for “Favorite Nightmare” by Blanks opens with the memories of his relationship done in a filtered film effect. Then, he wakes up from the nightmare and realizes it was just a dream. The memories start out really happy but then disappointing situations start to appear too. Due to this, his past relationship was his “favorite nightmare”. The music video almost depicts it as a Groundhog’s Day type scenario where he’s constantly waking up and realizing it was all just in his head.

“Catch Me If You Can” by Kelsy Krater feels almost like a horror or murder mystery parody. Everyone is in fancy clothes, almost like it was her wedding and she killed the groom. In the setting of this nice mansion, her bandmates dress up as well and partake in the action.

“Lonely Always, CA” by Me Nd Adam creates an alternative/fake feeling of LA by filming parts with a 90s camera and others with an obvious greenscreen displaying the good parts of LA. The Me Nd Adam band roams around LA to film this music video. I get a sense that the band is from the midwest and came to LA because that’s where they thought they could make it big, but when they got there they were hit with reality. LA isn’t as ideal as the media makes it seem. But I think overall, they seem to have a good time.

“Out of Love” by Busty and the Bass is a fun 2D animation. It’s very colorful and creative, though the music video doesn’t fully reflect the song’s lyrics, it definitely pairs well with the vibe. The transitions are very smooth and it takes the bowling plot to a whole new level. I’m not quite sure why they chose bowling as the theme of the music video, but it creates a very playful and strange atmosphere.

“Devil on My Shoulder” by Kelsy Krater is displayed by Kelsy and a little monkey being missing criminals on the run. It tells a short story, and the monkey is an interesting character to include. I believe the monkey represents the “devil on [her] shoulder.” If I remember correctly, just from watching things from pop culture, the type of monkey it is is known to be greedy and steal.

“Brick by Brick” by American Authors is super fun to watch and listen to. It’s a very positive, upbeat song. I really like how they displayed this simple message in a simple setting -the main singer of American Authors doing Jenga while the crew throws different colors and objects at him off screen- symbolizing no matter what gets in your way you can still pick yourself up and keep growing. Though American Author’s is a well-known band and has the ability to do something more upscale, the whole music video is extremely playful and has a comforting homemade feel.

“Daylight” by Joji and Diplo is a very strange music video but very playful as well. The setting is a director’s set and Joji and Diplo are crew members dealing with all these celebrities with huge amounts of plastic surgeries and fake tans. The set has all of these bright colors and outfits and everyone’s having a good time, even though it’s a long day at work. Then suddenly, Joji ends up in the middle of the desert in a tent and you hear this robotic “wake up” and suddenly I wonder if it was just a strange dream he had.

A very different mood from “Daylight”, “Run” by Joji is displayed through him trying to escape a neverending limo filled with celebrities and appearances that represent some aspect that comes with fame. It cuts between him struggling in the limo and singing laying down on the cracked floor as his face slowly cracks as well. Like “Daylight”, it ends with him waking up to the same robotic voice like it was a dream or a memory. It’s not clear if he’s in the same environment as the end of the last video but I would presume so. Then Joji sits down and opens a folded, old picture from his wallet. It’s a car in the middle of the desert or mountains with what seems to be a cracked window, portraying a correlation to earlier in the video when he escaped the limo by breaking through the back window.

“Checklist” by MAX illustrates “boyfriend boot camp” in a very colorful way. His girlfriend checks him in and there he learns to be a proper boyfriend. There is a very simple color scheme for the video–yellow, blue, and pink- making the video very bright and fun.

Things are a little bit complicated this quarter, but that doesn’t mean that SCAD Radio is going to stop providing music for you! We’ve got Regular Rotation Spotify playlists at the ready for you, curated by Hailey Feller, our very own Music Director.

In our regular rotation playlist, we promote new songs from upcoming and smaller artists. Perfect to listen to if you want to unwind, need something in the background, or are looking to change it up in the car. This playlist changes weekly on Mondays, so save what you like.

Check out the playlist here.

Here’s Hailey on some of her top picks for the regular rotation this week:

It is quite clear to me that my top two choices for the week are “Something Better” and “Lonely Always, CA” by Me Nd Adam. Once I heard those songs in my submissions, I became obsessed with them.

“Something Better” is a relatable song about bad drinking habits and hoping to get better. The singer is going through a rough time and drinks through it even though he knows it’s not the solution to his problems. Even though it’s not really supporting abstinence from drinking, Me Nd Adam tells his audience that drinking is not the answer. Overall, it’s a good message to listeners, while remaining relatable and realistic. To know that drinking to solve is not okay, but to understand that you will get through it too.

“Lonely Always, LA” goes against the idealistic view of LA and paints a different perspective of life there, talking about his experience as an artist in Los Angeles, CA. In addition to that, the beat is a fun one to bop too, and the chorus is really catchy. It’s starts of as a melancholy tune, but it picks up by the time it gets to the chorus, melodically saying “hey, there’s sad times but at the end of the day it’s all okay”.

Then we have “If I’d never let go” by Joshua, “Slow” by Matt Costa, and “Cherry Coke” by Answering Machine, filling up the rest of my Top 5 from this week’s playlist.

Joshua’s voice in “If I’d never let go” instantly hooked me. The more you listen, the more the song picks up, and Joshua’s singing gradually rises in passion. You can tell he genuinely feels what he’s singing about. You can feel the regret in his voice at losing the one he loved. I honestly just hope he can get them back with this song.

“Slow” by Matt Costa also connected with me pretty quickly due to the sound of Costa’s voice. The way he sings is so smooth and soothing. It’s a slow and relaxing song to listen to. It does pick up volume, but then he calming brings himself back down to the initial mellow tone. You would think to listen to this type of song in the background, but I usually take more of a break from my work to just enjoy the peaceful music.

Lastly, “Cherry Coke” by Answering Machine is just a fun song to bop along to. Having this come on can just bring up my mood as the song is so playful. I honestly don’t understand the underlying message of this song and why it’s called “Cherry Coke” but I think that’s what makes it fun. They’re just having a good time enjoying life.

Over the past few years Netflix, has blessed us with amazing shows like 13 Reason Why, Stranger Things, and Orange is the New Black. In March of 2018, one of the best show has come across my television in months: On My Block.

On My Block is a coming-of-age comedy drama about four funny, street-wise friends who must deal with the complications of relationships, high school, and the rough streets of Los Angeles.

The setting takes place in a Latino populated community, where the group of friend’s favorite pass time is guessing what kind of gunfire is being roared through the streets.

OMB talks about important issues that take appearance in many urban communities without having the scene to feel like a sitcom’s “Very Special Episode.”

The cast includes Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Stuck in The Middle‘s Ronni Hawk, and Liv and Maddie‘s Jessica Marie.

The show has great storylines, excellent character development, and some of television’s most memorable music.

OMB’s soundtrack consists of music from RAYANA JAY, KIRKO BANGZ, DEJ LOAF, RUSS, KHALID, and more!

One of my favorite songs on the series, “Changes” by DEJ LOAF, gives a sort of “jazz-y” Latin vibes with its eccentric horns and animated tempo.

If you want a great show this summer to watch with even greater music On My Block is the perfect choice.

The sun and the moon have realigned, or whatever else astrology is supposed to mean, and we have entered into a new Aries phase in all of our lives.

In celebration of this new time where everything seems to go wrong, we have compiled a playlist for you, our listeners, to enjoy when the world feels like it is burning and nothing is going right. We can only pray for Taurus season to come faster, but in all honesty, it isn’t much better.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is someone who is a classic Aries. She is powerful, dynamic, stubborn, and almost so attention seeking you think she was a Leo. Our Aries song pick for her is “Born This Way”, and man, she surely was born an Aries.

Elton John

You can’t miss him. Elton John is famous for his wild and crazy and has never let us down in that respect. His song of choice is the season is “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”, but make sure the black eye is in your stars before you go around throwing punches.

Fergie

We may never want to hear her rendition of the National Anthem ever again, but a classic Fergie song is always a confidence boost for anyone, Aries or not. If you need one during these trying times, give “Fergilious” a listen to.

Chaka Khan

She’s close to the cusp but Chaka Khan is still an Aries through and through, and for her, we chose “Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?” Every Aries will be asking this in their lifetime, so they might as well get a lot of it out in this song.

Diana Ross

“I’m Coming Out” is a great Aries anthem as the new season gets into full swing. If you are an Aries, let this song inspire you to do the most while you have this time to shine. If you’re not an Aries, you can listen to the song, but let them have this one. They don’t get too much.

If you want to check out more Aries artists, here’s a list of more for you to go have a listen to:

  • Celine Dion
  • Aretha Franklin
  • Reba McEntire
  • Doris Day
  • Billie Holiday
  • Bach
  • Lil Wayne
  • Kenny Chesney
  • Selena
  • Mandy Moore
  • MC Hammer
  • Pharrell Williams
  • Steven Tyler
