\u201cSmile\u201d is, in many ways,\u00a0Doctor Who<\/em>\u2019s most recent response to today\u2019s social and political climate.\u00a0 In the face of tragedy and unrest comes the search for optimism and happiness.\u00a0 In a futuristic Earth colony, the Doctor and Bill explore the dangers of happiness and the pitfalls of pure optimism.\u00a0 With a mixture of familiar technology\u2014communicating rudimentary emotions through emojis\u2014and advanced micro bots known as the Vardi comprising the entire structure of the colony, this futuristic utopia is the exact excitement Bill is looking for.\u00a0 She meets every discovery with curiosity and amazement.\u00a0 \u201cThanks for bringing me,\u201d she says.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a great day out.\u201d\u00a0 Nothing is what it seems, however, and when the Vardi see grief as the enemy of happiness, the survival of the whole human race is at stake.<\/p>\n It\u2019s an interesting look at the relationship between man and technology, and the never ending cycle of grief.\u00a0 Such a strong emphasis on happiness led to oversimplification, creating the very opposite of the intended.\u00a0 When everything is black and white, it simultaneously becomes man\u2019s downfall and the Vardi\u2019s survival.<\/p>\n With big ideas, the episode falls a little flat.\u00a0 Despite smiling proving to be a great source of physical comedy on Capaldi\u2019s part, the humor couldn\u2019t always carry the story.\u00a0 Perhaps it\u2019s because talking so much about happiness always comes with the caveat of talking about grief.\u00a0 Ironically called \u201cSmile,\u201d there isn\u2019t much room for smiling.\u00a0 Through all of the twists and turns, everything seemed so predictable.\u00a0 But Bill is still delightful, and her teacher\/pupil relationship with the Doctor is still fun.\u00a0 They make a good team and ultimately save the episode.<\/p>\n The Doctor asks Bill, \u201cDo you know why I always win at chess?\u00a0 Because I have a secret move: I kick over the board.\u201d\u00a0 Sometimes the simplest solution, is the best solution.\u00a0 In an episode asking big questions, the best part is the Doctor and Bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n 3 out of 5 emojis<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" \u201cSmile\u201d is, in many ways,\u00a0Doctor Who\u2019s most recent response to today\u2019s social and political climate.\u00a0 In the face of tragedy and unrest comes the search for optimism and happiness.\u00a0 In a futuristic Earth colony, the Doctor and Bill explore the dangers of happiness and the pitfalls of pure optimism.\u00a0 With a mixture of familiar technology\u2014communicating […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":2238,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[32],"tags":[262,310,309,104,261],"yoast_head":"\n
