Run DMC rapped about how king-like they were,\nGrandmaster Flash preached his \u201cMessage\u201d, it was a simple genre anyone could\nenjoy. Then a bunch a dudes from the hood of Compton, California changed all\nthat. Mere seconds into their first official album, NWA (not gonna say what the\n\u201cN\u201d stands for) showed us the strength of street knowledge, pulling no punches\nalongside more N or F bombs than every other artist in the genre <em>combined<\/em>\nhad spit on record at the time. Accompanying Ice Cube\u2019s furious opening verse,\nbackground police sirens add to the rough and tumble lifestyle the group\nbrought with their lyrics. <em>Straight Outta Compton<\/em> ushered in a new era\nof \u201cgangsta rap\u201d music. Locked and loaded with swearing, shock, and sexual\nantics, the 1988 debut is certainly not for virgin ears. The titular opening\ntrack yanks the listener right into NWA\u2019s world of crime, cops, and mayhem.\nThrough the first song, Ice Cube compares his crime record to Charles Manson,\nMC Ren boasts about the \u201cgood piece of p*ssy\u201d he gets, and Eazy-muthaf**king-E\nmakes it clear he doesn\u2019t \u201cgive a damn about a b*tch\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, that was all just a pre-game warmup for\ntrack number 2\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stage is set: a courtroom, Dr. Dre is the\njudge, MC Ren, Ice Cube, and Eazy-E are the prosecuting attorneys, and the man\non trial is a police officer. The rappers paint the picture of oppression at\nthe hands of racist police officers with scenario depictions of corrupt cops,\nwith a roaring chant of \u201cF*ck tha Police\u201d repeated in the chorus. Vitriolic\nvulgarity hangs behind every word on this monumental rap song, as the group\nbrings the war between their black neighborhood and the LAPD to centerstage in\nundeniably the most controversial song on the album. The harsh six-minute piece\nmemorably resembles a world of police brutality still prevalent 30 years later.\nThe banger ruffled so many feathers, the FBI even sent them an official letter\nwarning of the song\u2019s promotion of disrespect towards law enforcement: a letter\nnow on display at the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame. It makes you think: if\nTipper Gore lost her mind over Prince\u2019s scandalous \u201cDarling Nikki\u201d, she must\u2019ve\ndropped dead when she heard this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, one of the gang\u2019s biggest hits was\nDre\u2019s moment in the sun without a swear word. Perhaps even more ironic is that\nDre denounces marijuana use in the opening verse, citing \u201cit\u2019s known to give a\nbrother brain damage\u201d. Merely 4 years later he released his solo debut, titled <em>The\nChronic<\/em>. \u201cExpress Yourself\u201d samples Charles Wright\u2019s song, and Dre carries\nmost of it aside from a short intro with Ice Cube. He otherwise doesn\u2019t have\nmuch lyrics on the album, since he served primarily as a producer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere, the hysterical start to \u201cGangsta\nGangsta\u201d portrays a guy hearing police sirens, a tire screech from nearby, then\na barrage of gunshots right before Ice Cube declares \u201cHere\u2019s a little somethin\n\u2018bout a ni**a like me, never shoulda been let out the penitentiary\u201d, just one\nof the LP\u2019s many fascinating quips. Another track good at cooking up some\nlaughs is \u201cI Ain\u2019t tha 1\u201d, where Ice Cube expresses his dissatisfaction with\nmoney-hungry girls long before Kanye\u2019s \u201cGold Digger\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amongst all the violence and debauchery, it\u2019s easy to have forgotten the final track, a complete 180\u00b0 from the rest of the songs. \u201cSomething 2 Dance 2\u201d starts with the most genuinely \u201880s bassline on the entire record and a verse by Arabian Prince, the group\u2019s sixth man who departed before <em>Straight Outta Compton<\/em>\u2019s release. Nevertheless, the funky bopper is still a jumpy conclusion, if albeit an unusual change of pace from everything else. I\u2019m not exactly sure why Arabian Prince left the band, but I imagine it\u2019s probably because he was more interested in making \u201880s beats than rapping about murdering cops and banging hookers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the group\u2019s disbandment, the guys went in\ncompletely separate directions: Dre dipped more into producing, discovering\nstars like Eminem and 50 Cent. Eazy-E died of AIDS in 1995, and Ice Cube\nstarred in \u201cAre We There Yet?\u201d (seriously). The nasty breakup was highlighted in\nNWA\u2019s 2015 biopic sharing the name of the album. Unfortunately, the band\u2019s\nsuccess was short-lived: there were more diss tracks the members made about\neach other than actual albums produced while they were together. <em>Straight\nOutta Compton <\/em>is the only official NWA album made with the core five, along\nwith one more LP after Ice Cube left, but remains a hip-hop classic that\nchanged the course of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SCAD Radio gives it a 9.4\/10<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past August, NWA\u2019s legendary album celebrated its 30th anniversary.
