{"id":4590,"date":"2018-10-29T15:36:43","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T15:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scadradio.org\/?p=4590"},"modified":"2018-10-29T19:36:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T19:36:15","slug":"film-fest-quincy-does-justice-to-music-icon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scadradio.org\/2018\/10\/29\/film-fest-quincy-does-justice-to-music-icon\/","title":{"rendered":"Film Fest: Quincy Does Justice to Music Icon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Typically, when you sit down to watch a biographical\ndocumentary, you expect to leave the theatre having learned a great deal about\nthe subject\u2019s life. <em>Quincy <\/em>achieves\nall that and so much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its two-hour runtime, the film covers the\nextraordinary life of Quincy Jones&#8211;one of the most highly accomplished and\ncelebrated musicians, producers, and humanitarians of his generation. Archival\nclips and audio that explain his childhood and earlier career are interwoven\nwith footage of the Quincy of today&#8211;a still vibrant and genuinely funny man\nwho takes on massive projects despite his age and struggles with health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That only scratches the surface of this beautiful\nportrait, though: <em>Quincy <\/em>is a deeply\npersonal and unexpectedly moving work of art. It\u2019s absolutely painful to watch\nhim almost fade away into addiction, and we relate to him on such a human level\nby the end despite the fact that he\u2019s such a star. Rashida Jones, Quincy\u2019s\ndaughter, co-directed the film, which allowed for an intimate peak into his\ndaily life and the issues that plague him. Hearing that Rashida Jones was a\ndirector on the project did spur some questions of bias, but she ultimately\nsucceeds wonderfully in using that closeness as an avenue to create an honest\nportrayal of her father rather than a superficial feature-length\ncongratulation. The Q &amp; A session with Rashida immediately following the\nfilm further solidified the desire to create a picture that not only told the\nfacts of Quincy\u2019s life, but also captured his soul and how he existed and still\nexists in this world.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After watching <em>Quincy,\n<\/em>you\u2019re in complete awe of the breadth of work this man has completed and\nthe effect that he has had on the world&#8211;he not only became successful as a\nmusician in his own right, but he scored and later produced films, elevated the\ncareers of many-a-musician (including Michael Jackson), and did an astounding\namount of humanitarian work within and outside of the music industry. The\nlegendary status bestowed upon Quincy is by no means unearned. He is a man who\nlives up to the tall tales, and lucky enough for us, he has graciously accepted\nthe role and filled it well. Quincy Jones recognizes his faults and flaws, and\nmost importantly, he realizes that he\u2019s human. Countless times across the\nruntime of the film, we see him dispense his knowledge to his children,\nstudents, and comrades, and we\u2019re so lucky to have him today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Quincy <\/em>is the lovingly made,\nentertaining, and all-encompassing tribute that Quincy Jones deserves to have.\nHopefully this documentary along with the truly wonderful works of art he has\nproduced will cement Quincy\u2019s legacy as a musical god among men. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SCAD Radio gives <em>Quincy<\/em>\na strong 9 out of 10. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typically, when you sit down to watch a biographical documentary, you expect to leave the theatre having learned a great deal about the subject\u2019s life.
