It became obvious after the release of his self-titled\nEP and debut album, <em>21st Century Liability<\/em>, that YUNGBLUD was willing to\npush social barriers within the alt scene. Songs on the album discussed serious\ntopics such as corrupt politics in the UK, the importance of mental health, and\neven the American controversy related to the NRA. Harrison has now released his\nnew EP, <em>the underrated youth<\/em>, that continues breaking the societal mold keeping\nthose that are \u201cdifferent\u201d in a box.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EP begins with \u201cbraindead!\u201d Note the exclamation\u2014\nit\u2019s loud, rowdy, and easily moshed to. \u201cI think you should clean your\nteeth\/With guilty truths and liars bleach,\u201d he yells. Whether he\u2019s staying true\nto his interest in politics or calling out a particular individual is left for\nthe listener to decide. Over the course of his growing fame, he\u2019s been open\nabout his disgust about how the the government is run. Harrison believes it\u2019s a\nrequirement to be involved in politics in the time we\u2019re in. With the line \u201cI\njust want to be pretty braindead!,\u201d he could be referring to citizens who\nprefer being \u201cbraindead,\u201d or uninformed on the lies that politicians may be\nspewing from their guilty teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the lead single \u201cparents\u201d appears to be\na \u201cscrew you\u201d to our predecessors on the surface, with a closer analysis it\ndoesn\u2019t seem to be the case. It\u2019s truer to YUNGBLUD\u2019s brand, encouraging\nlisteners to be honest with themselves instead of letting the people around you\ndictate who you are. The single was quite the introduction to his EP\u2014made to be\ncatchy. The opening lyrics \u201cI was born in a messed-up century,\u201d follows through\nwith references to being able to buy a gun at the age of 16, rampant\nhomophobia, prescription drug addiction, and religious contradictions. However,\neven with being born in a \u201cmessed up century,\u201d Harrison sings, \u201cI know I\u2019ll\nnever be alone\/It\u2019s alright, we\u2019ll survive\/\u2019Cause parents ain\u2019t always right,\u201d\nas a form of support towards those in the millennial\/gen z generation that may\nfeel hopeless when those with outdated views hold power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second single, \u201coriginal me\u201d, features Dan\nReynolds from Imagine Dragons. It\u2019s an ode to those who don\u2019t feel comfortable\nin their own skin, instead wishing they were anyone else. The song expresses\nfeelings of self-loathing, a shared experience that has appeared in the social media\nhive mind among today\u2019s youth. It\u2019s a support line; the listener is not alone\nin their feelings of worthlessness. The end of the song, \u201cDon\u2019t let \u2018em waste\nyour time\/I\u2019m the original loser\/(Congratulations)\u201d is a cheer\u2014even if someone\nis feeling as if they\u2019re the worst, it\u2019s something to be proud of because no\none can be you, and that deserves a some praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EP slows down by the fourth song, \u201ccasual\nsabotage,\u201d which references Harrison\u2019s struggle with mental health. He\ndescribes the fight between someone who is struggling with their own existence,\nthe negative thoughts in their brain, and even the ability to speak up about\nit. When released on YouTube, the single\u2019s artwork displayed Harrison\u2019s mouth\nwith graphic makeup, as if his lips had been sewn shut by thick twine. He\nspeaks to a common experience of mental health struggles; one that is\n\u201ccamouflage\u201d and separates the individual from their own existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction to \u201chope for the underrated\nyouth\u201d continues the slower tempo of the previous track. YUNGBLUD divulges his\nexperience, one filled with hurt, one where he \u201cain\u2019t got the patience to be\nsomeone else.\u201d But even with his experience of feeling different, hurt, and\nwishing someone would put an end to the misery, he belts \u201cThere\u2019s hope for the\nunderrated youth.\u201d The human experience lends itself to feeling pain, but\nHarrison suggests that even with our experience, there is hope for a better\nfuture and existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finale \u201cwaiting on the weekend\u201d ends the EP\non a slow note. Instead of his typical politically charged style, \u201cwaiting on\nthe weekend\u201d lends itself towards pop trends of discussing a girl that appears\nto have been through better times. Following the timeline of his recent\nrelationship with Halsey, it\u2019s possible that this relationship influenced the\nlyrics, especially considering he stalled the EP an additional week, posting an\nInstagram video asking for forgiveness for the delay. It\u2019s quite a lullaby to\nend the fiery alternative EP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>the underrated youth<\/em> transitions from loud, pop-punk to low-key alternative, with YUNGBLUD staying true to his roots in the alt scene and breaking from conservative societal norms. But he lends himself to a more sensitive side about both his own understanding and those who have grown up in the same generation as him. This EP is meant to be hope for <em>the underrated youth<\/em>.
