{"id":5473,"date":"2019-11-16T05:00:17","date_gmt":"2019-11-16T05:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scadradio.org\/?p=5473"},"modified":"2019-11-21T23:51:48","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T23:51:48","slug":"lost-wisdom-pt-2-mount-eerie-is-melancholic-but-optimistic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scadradio.org\/2019\/11\/16\/lost-wisdom-pt-2-mount-eerie-is-melancholic-but-optimistic\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Lost Wisdom Pt. 2&#8217;- Mount Eerie is Melancholic But Optimistic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Similar to its devastating predecessors <em>A Crow Looked at Me <\/em>and <em>Now\nOnly<\/em>, Mount Eerie\u2019s <em>Lost Wisdom Pt. 2\n<\/em>charts Phil Elverum\u2019s emotional journey through dealing with the death of\nhis wife and now the falling apart of his second marriage to actress Michelle\nWilliams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lost Wisdom Pt. 2 <\/em>does have a part one, unlike the\nElverum\u2019s most famous work, <em>The Glow Pt.\n2<\/em>. Its themes tie presciently well into the life events he\u2019s grappling with\nright now, and a comparison between the two albums shows massive growth as a\nsongwriter and a person. His worldview has entirely shifted in the 11 years\nbetween, and it\u2019s difficult to listen to songs like \u201cYou Swan, Go On\u201d knowing\nthe grief coming for Phil and the subject of the song, Genevi\u00e8ve Castr\u00e9e.\nInstrumental and melodic hallmarks from <em>A\nCrow Looked at Me <\/em>are evident on <em>Pt.\n2<\/em>, but Elverum also stays true to <em>Lost\nWisdom, <\/em>acknowledging that despite his world being shaken up and torn\napart, there\u2019s still some things that are worth salvaging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the major shifts in Elverum\u2019s music since the death\nof his first wife is lyrics that have become highly literal and very direct. In\nthe face of complete desolation, he sang \u201cwords fail\u201d after making a career\nbased on the power of words combined with music. <em>Lost Wisdom Pt. 2 <\/em>definitely has some of this minimal,\nanti-metaphorical style of lyricism attached to it, but other songs on the\nalbum discuss more than just the mundanities of life. \u201cReal Lost Wisdom\u201d has\nmore of a sense of the mystical with Elverum singing about the nature of\nknowledge being passed down to future descendants- a theme he\u2019s previously\nexplored. In stark contrast, the next track \u201cWidows\u201d discusses small and tragic\nyet evocative details of the singer\u2019s life, describing more of a narrative than\na philosophy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the constant hardships in his life, it seems like Phil is continuing to evolve as an artist and human being. Musically, his writing has become less stark and more expressive. Julie Doiron\u2019s vocal presence lends to a feeling of companionship- it curbs some of the loneliness in Elverum\u2019s words. Although there are many hard-hitting moments throughout the album, they\u2019re undercut by a recurring sense of hopefulness. It\u2019s easy to feel like there\u2019s no point in trying to find and maintain something as elusive as love, especially when there\u2019s a distinct possibility of immense pain. Instead of shying away, Phil implores us and himself to \u201clook into the fire\u201d and love intensely.
