Julia Bardo EP ‘Phase’ is Airy and Slower Paced

Julia Bardo

My first reaction to this album is that the music is slow and airy. I wasn’t sure if this was my type of music. Slow songs rarely capture my attention. Someone else may very likely like Bardo’s type of music, but if you have read any of my other reviews, you may pick up on a theme that I enjoy more upbeat songs with a relatively fast pace. So listening to this, though I could hear it picking up, it wasn’t enough to really grasp my attention.

Additionally, I felt the first song, “Into Your Eyes,” has some weird instrumentals and strumming out of nowhere. I don’t mean to be overly critical here; I believe it is just my taste in music. In saying that, the second song was still not exciting to me. By this point, my dad’s opinion was that the “production quality seems off-balance in terms of mixing”. I think what he’s saying with this is that the artist has potential, but her music needs refinement.

The best song, in my opinion, is “Lonely Morning”. As I mentioned earlier, what I look for  in good music for me is the song being upbeat, with a reasonable dynamic range; and this song does just that. It is still not a fast song, but it’s simple and pleasant to listen to. For this artist, I feel that fits her persona. I don’t think that at this phase of her life, her music will have a fast pace with a louder volume. Her niche is doing things at a slower, quieter pace, and I believe she can cater to an audience that is into that. She’s still starting up, and every artist can improve and learn their strengths the longer they work in the industry.

Julia is probably still in the experimental phase of her music, trying to find her sound. The last song, “I Wanna Feel Love,” is more upbeat and less quiet. It’s a little faster than the previous song but not too fast. I think I still like “Lonely Morning” more. This song seems folky. When I listen, I think of 70s hippie vibes where they’re all in a drum circle with a tambourine in hand. In the end, I think this was an excellent way to finish off the album, with it ending in a positive mood.
