Irene Diaz has been singing almost all her life but didn’t label herself a singer until she was about 20. She wrote music just to let her emotions out. “I think for me, music is very therapeutic, and the time I started writing, I was about 16, and my parents were going through a divorce. I didn’t realize I was using it as an outlet,” she states. Music has always been something Irene has loved, and over the years, her voice has developed. She adds, “And just with my art, it evolves.” Like her own music, her influences have changed over the years. She explains, “Because I think everything I listen to helps me, it influences my art.” Growing up, Irene listened to a lot of Nina Simon, Radiohead, Mazzy Star, the Sundays, and Coldplay. But in actuality, she is influenced by everything.

Irene sings to lovers. Her audience is people who love love. She expands, “People who understand love is a journey, and there are always ups and downs.” Her music is for people who want to practice self-love. Irene’s songs are perfect for people who are on a journey.

On the topic of self-love, I asked Irene how she deals with her mental health while on tour. She responds, “Last year, I went on a tour with Carla Morrison for three weeks, and I had the support of Carolyn, my partner, and her parents came along, so I slept a lot. But early on throughout my career, I struggled with anxiety, like stage performance, the anticipation before going on stage, or even feeling like you’re not enough, especially online.” Like many artists, Irene compared herself to others and felt initially overwhelmed with the fact that there are so many ways to get your music out. Later she realized that she could use the tools productively in order to create her own path in getting her voice out there. A big thing for her was working on her thought pattern, and mental health has become more of a priority for her now because, as she states, “I think as musicians, as artists, we’re light workers here to give and give, and we can’t give if we’re not giving to ourselves.” We can’t light up if we’re not fueling ourselves, so we must care for ourselves.

It’s clear that Irene’s songs are written with emotions and that her relationships are what drive her music. Her album “Lovers and Friends” is a collective of songs that she has been writing since she started writing music. A lot of the songs are from her 20s. With the help of Carla Morrison and her producers, Irene gathered the songs she already had been working on and then wrote a few more, creating a collection that explored different relationships she’s been in and different relationships that she’s seen her friends go through. With that, the album is very personal. Her favorite song on the album is “What’s Going On.” It’s the last song in the album, and it’s about how sometimes we struggle with communication. Irene expands, “The song is about the other person not communicating to you what they’re going through or how they’re feeling, so in that sense, you start making things up in your head in what you think it’s going to end because they’re not communicating on what’s going on.” The song is a personal expression as she’s learning to communicate more effectively with others and her partner. But, she adds, “Sometimes it’s a struggle, but I think awareness is key; knowing what you’re going through, knowing what you want, and also setting boundaries for yourself, I think that is very important.”

Irene’s favorite part about songwriting is the question, “Where is it going to go next?” She appreciates the emotions that come from creating out of thin air. She enjoys exploring the possibilities that creating a song may bring. Her newest single, “Lost,” is out now! “It’s a song about confession of desire; it’s very sensual,” Irene comments. “It’s a culmination of where we’ve been all these years, like learning different producers, and now we have something that’s like our baby,” she continues.

Genviève Beaudoin, the lead singer of Dead Gowns, would describe herself as an earnest songwriter, “trying to put you, the listener, in a certain place in time. I think every song to me feels like setting the scene,” she explains. Dead Gowns is an alt-country band with a brief pop disco phase. Indie alt-country has been Genviève’s go-to genre since she was a teenager, and pop disco was an experiment. She mentions, “It was a really great break from folk adjacent songwriting style that I had really studied. And working over different rhymes and soundscapes just pushed me into a different zone.” Luke Kalloch, the guitarist in Dead Gowns and Genviève’s partner, said to Genviève when creating music, “We could probably turn this song into a Dead Gowns tune, it’s disco now, but it could be alt-country.” That’s what they’ve been doing since.

In the same motion of experimenting with music, one of Dead Gown’s members, Hamilton Belk, is a pedal steel player. For those who don’t know, pedal steel is a type of guitar that sits flat on a stand with strings that can be altered in pitch through pedals while being pressed with a movable steel bar. Hamilton plays many instruments but has become a premier pedal steel player. Genviève exclaims, “We’re so lucky he moved to Maine and wanted to join our band.” They gave Hamilton free rein and all the lead instrumental parts for this run, whereas they might have separated pedal steel and lead guitar up. Luke plays bass, but usually plays a Barrington guitar. Genviève affirms, “It’s all Hamilton now, so we just gave him free rein to do whatever he wanted to do.”

Dead Gown’s favorite song to perform is “Renter Not a Buyer,” their newest single. Genviève explains that the song came to her while driving in the car. “I just started singing that first verse, ‘fell down the stairs, tried to give you a kiss…’ and throughout that week, I just kept driving with that song and kept trying to build on the story.” It’s a satisfying moment when you go from singing a song in the car to having a whole band behind you as you perform it on stage. It’s the surreal moment where everyone is rocking out and reflecting on how it started and where it is now.

On the topic of songwriting and the single “Renter Not a Buyer,” I asked Genviève what inspired her to write in a story-like manner. She responds, “I think it’s one thing to say how you are feeling, and I think it’s another to try and put the listener in a place where they are in the feeling like they’re in it with you, and they’re going through the same fucked up morning that I’m having in ‘Renter Not a Buyer.’” Genviève feels it’s “an earnest way to try to be inside an emotion rather than just telling you about the emotion.”

In the music industry, unless you’re signed with a major label, it’s tough to obtain health care. In between songs, Genviève revealed being diagnosed with endometriosis; health care is critical to her. In conversation with Genviève, she describes what she must do as a musician in order to have health insurance and deal with endometriosis. “It’s really, really difficult. I have to have health care, I have to have treatment for my endometriosis, and that comes at a cost. Last year, I couldn’t tour necessarily how I wanted to because I had to work to stay on my health insurance to cover my procedure costs,” Genviève confesses. Health care is essential. Genviève is lucky that her employer allows her to work on the road. She’s learned that the easiest way to maintain health insurance is to be employed by a company that offers continual care. At the end of the day, she believes that health care should be accessible to all.

Dead Gowns started in 2018 but paused for a few years while Genviève experimented with pop music. The band became more active in 2021 when they made their EP, “How,” released in 2022. One of their favorite memories was that release show in their hometown. Genviève explains, “It felt like we really had our community around us.” Since that moment, the tour has been incredible; finally, being able to do that is the band’s high point.

In terms of bucket list items, SXSW was on Genviève’s bucket list. The three-week tour that they’re currently on after SXSW was on their bucket list. On the whole, the band follows what they feel is their calling. Dead Gowns plans to continue touring, playing at festivals, and putting out music. Genviève exclaims in continuation, “And it feels really fucking good.”

The nice thing about SXSW and being back in Austin is that Luke lived in Texas for ten years, so they have good friends here. With their friends, they’ve been drinking great coffee and eating great tacos—Luke and Genviève like Pueblo Viejo’s and Veracruz for tacos and Flitch for coffee. Genviève mentions how they go and support their friends where ever they may be performing down here, whether in supermarkets, hotel bars, official showcases, or nonofficial showcases. She reveals, “I wasn’t expecting to find community at SXSW, and it’s great to see friends every day.” The bands support and find each other as a community and friends. Genviève is friends with Izzy Heltai, and when I was talking to Izzy, he mentioned how it is incredible to see your friends from all over the country and everything; and with festivals like SXSW, you have a spot to meet up. Part of being a musician is building community, and I think that is something Dead Gowns and many other bands appreciate when it comes to festivals like SXSW. It’s a place to meet new people and connect with old friends.

Izzy Heltai is a singer-songwriter from Massachusetts who recently moved to Nashville, TN. When asking how he describes himself and his music, he told me if there’s one thing he hopes people take away is that he’s kind. “I try to make people feel comfortable. I like people a lot.” In terms of music, his songs don’t have a genre, but if he had to categorize it, it’s indie/folky.

His musical inspirations are in the realm of indie and folk genres as well as singer-songwriters. He explains, “Songwriting that has great melodies, good lyrics, really good integrity to kind of like the next stage, by melding cool production, like indie rock stuff.” A big inspiration for Izzy is Bristol Maroney. He became buddies with him when he moved down to Nashville. Nashville has a great community of artists that all support each other. He states, “It’s really not a competitive space at all in Nashville. At least I found with the friends I have.”

Izzy’s favorite part of his career has been playing at Newport Folk Festival. He explains, “They have these after-parties, and there was this after-party curated by Marcus Mumford, where it was a bunch of artists just doing one song at this old theater after the festival closed down.” In addition to Marcus Mumford, the lineup included one of the women from Mountain Man, one of the members of Sylvan Esso, Nathaniel Rateliff, Lucy Dacus, Tyler the Creator, a member from Dawes, Blake Mills, and Natalie Merchant. “It was such a cool experience,” he exclaims. Izzy disclaims that he is no where the level of all of the bands listed, but he was able to play with them because Marcus Mumford has been of fan of Izzy and was really kind to him. It was the first time in his career where he was in a space and get to be a community of people he’s always looked up to. Izzy adds, “because at the end of the day everyone’s so nice, and you don’t feel like it’s a room full of people you’ve just grown up listening to, you just feel like it’s a room of just incredible songwriters.”

I mention in response, “What’s really cool about being here at SXSW and everything is seeing how tight knit the music community has been. And the fact that everyone kind of knows each other and supports each other. It’s just amazing.”

“I think when you’re not in the music scene, it’s really easy to romanticize it,” Izzy replies. He reminds the audience, “At the end of the day we all are doing something that we love but it’s our job, and it’s more fun to work with your friends than not.” In conclusion, one of his favorite parts about doing this as a career is making a lot of really cool friendships.

Izzy Heltai performing at the Iron Bear in Austin, TX, at SXSW,  March 17, 2023.

Izzy tries not to make a bucket list and live in an expectations. He tries to stay in the present and to just keep doing what feels good. Izzy describes this interview on the podcast “Dax Shepard and the Armchair Expert” where Dax interviews Ed Sheeran and “he was basically just talking about in his head he’s always had things where he mentioned how his goal is just to get to Wembley Stadium, and to sell out Wembley Stadium, and then Ed’s like, ‘…then I got there, and played, and I got off, and I didn’t feel any different.’ Because when you get lost in expectation, it just keeps you out of the moment.” I mention to Izzy that I appreciate this perspective because a lot of bands, and people in general, have these big goals for themselves, but Izzy’s statement reminds us to remember to live in the moment and not to get caught up in expectations. I think it’s okay to have goals, goals are what push you, but if you get caught up in what could happen you can get lost in what is happening in the present. We don’t know what the future consists of but we can try and make best of the present. Izzy mentions how it definitely oscillates. He struggles with mental health and it’s hard to get out of the mindset of comparing yourself to others. What helps him is to stay present. He expands, “When I’m on the road and doing exactly what I love, which is just playing for people that seem to like my songs, I’m just like, ‘Yeah, I’ve made it.’ No matter where it goes, or if it grows or not, or if I stopped doing it, well I’ve had those moments. And that’s been fun.”

On the topic of mental health, I asked him if he has any advice for people that are in the music industry. He mentions how his team is an integral part by being assertive. “Therapy is really important; I think. I also got anxiety medication so I’m on Zoloft and Wellbutrin, and that’s been really helpful,” he reveals. It also helps if you have a routine, Izzy is a big runner and cyclist. Doing those distance activities is very meditative for him, and fitness in general. And lastly, it’s helpful to have a support system.

Izzy on vocals and guitar, George on guitar, Henry on drums; performing at the Iron Bear in Austin, TX, at SXSW, March 17, 2023.

Izzy’s single “All This Beauty” just came out! “It’s a song about getting caught up, you know, like I do and like a lot of people do with what you don’t have yet in your life, and trying to be thankful and present with the good things in my life. People, music, you know, the thing is that I enjoy it.” His favorite song to perform is “25” because the lyrics are clever and the song is fun; and people seem to like it too.

His favorite thing about SXSW is seeing his friends. “You get to see a lot being in music and traveling, it’s like you meet a lot of people and make a lot of friends that don’t live where you live. And things like this is an excuse to see everyone, and it’s awesome,” Izzy affirms as we wrap up the conversation.

This article is part of SCAD Radio’s SXSW collection, in which some of our radio members visited the music portion of the SXSW Festival and Showcase in Austin, TX.

In Tribe Friday, Noah is on vocals and guitar, Zack on Drums, Isak on guitar, and Robin on bass. The members of Tribe Friday all joined at different times. Isak and Noah have known each other for approximately seven years, as they used to hang out at hardcore shows. Noah asked him to play guitar in his band, not because he could play guitar but because of his work ethic. He called Isak and asked, “Can you learn how to play guitar and join my band, then come to the US with me?” Isak said yes without much thought. They did their first show together in LA, and that’s when Robin joined, now about five years ago. They met Robin in a similar manner: they had shows together, hung out at parties, and Noah recorded for his band as well. Shortly after, the pandemic hit. It was a stressful time for the band. Then, Zack showed up one day and said, “Hey, I’m going to hang out with you guys now.” And that is how Tribe Friday became the band we know today.

Tribe Friday labels themselves as a bubblegum emo boyband. Noah states, “In the beginning, it was really a joke, but then we leaned into it really hard. And then we actually became a bubblegum emo boyband.” The term bubblegum emo is used as an adjective to describe the band because they make upbeat music with depressing lyrics; they are all emo kids, after all. So it’s the contrast between the upbeat sounds and lyrics behind it that make the music “bubblegum emo.”

All the members also have side projects to keep them busy, in addition to being in Tribe Friday. Because he’s a drummer, Zack has ten different bands he is a part of. Zack explains, “Being a drummer in Sweden, you get a lot of calls. There’s not a lot of us; we’re a dying breed.” He ranges from pop to hip-hop, to grunge, and so on. Luckily, it hasn’t affected Tribe Friday from touring, and until it does, Zack plans to keep bouncing around. Isak also tends to bounce around. He and Zack are doing a podcast about music and teaching music to teenagers. The podcast is for those who don’t know how stuff works but are afraid to ask. Isak states, as an example, someone’s thoughts may be, “Oh, you should know this by now….” Zack adds another example of why someone would be listening to their podcast, saying, “You learned your instrument and got good at that, but how do you come to the point of being a musician and playing for other artists, so that’s just the gap in between.” In addition to the podcast, Isak mixes and produces music, and plays guitar for his solo project. Contrastingly, Robin and Noah both only have one side project, but Noah would like to remind the audience, “Being in Tribe Friday is like a full-time job. We all have stuff that we do on the side, but this definitely takes up the majority of our time.” Not swaying too far from Tribe Friday’s genre, Robin’s other band plays 2005 punk. Lastly, Noah hosts Death Disco. He explains, “It’s like a musical theater, EDM, and Apocalypse project. We wear suits and corpse paint. And then we have theater numbers and make like crazy sets.”

Their number one bucket list item is playing at Madison Square Garden. Besides, of course, world domination. The band exclaims, “World domination is the goal, eventually.” Noah adds how he’d love to do a proper US tour; from his observation so far, he states that a lot of music is happening in America. He continues, saying, “There seems to be a lot of cool alternative scenes going on most of the time.” Along with the US tour, his dream would be to open for My Chemical Romance or have My Chemical Romance open for them.

There are a few different moments that come to mind in response to what their favorite memory of their career is. Robin starts the conversation by declaring the Melody Festival, which is part of  Eurovision, a European song contest. Zack explains, “All the European countries compete against each other with one song.” Noah adds, “We were in the Swedish qualifiers for that, which is a huge event in Sweden, so we played an arena show. It was a proper arena stage with three million viewers. That was awesome. Definitely cool.” However, Noah’s favorite memory is a few months after that. They played a small show in Stockholm with only about two hundred people in the audience, but as soon as they started playing, everyone knew all the words to every single song. Noah remarks, “I was just sort of crying watching that happen.” Isak’s favorite memory is their show in Germany, where they had insane amounts of crowd surfing and mosh pits. Noah notes that it was the first show after the pandemic, so the audience was very excited to be back. “There were too many people all in the place, so they stood on each other’s shoulders so they could grab the lighting rig and swing from it. It was really fun. We get crazy crowds, but I think we also like that that’s the way we act on stage; I think people just pick up on that and go wild, which is fun,” Noah comments.

This is Tribe Friday’s first time at SXSW. Their favorite part of the experience so far was their show on Tuesday night. “It was a pretty packed house, and the audience seemed to enjoy it. We even got a mosh pit happening,” Noah states. Being at SXSW also introduced Tribe Friday to some of their newest favorite bands. Noah reports that Alaska Alaska “were just absolutely brilliant; like really, really good. I just saw them once yesterday. Then also this band called Little Island that also played here. They’re from the UK.” Robin adds that Dead Pony was awesome as well. Zack piles on to the conversation stating, “There’s been so much amazing music here.”

I then asked the band how they deal with mental health while on the road and any advice they’d like to give others in the industry. Noah states how the band does a lot to make it work on the road when they don’t have much of a budget, and all usually have to share one hotel room. He explains that they have a twelve to twelve rule on when it should be quiet. In addition to that rule, “Communication, just talking about stuff, because otherwise you just get caught up in the stress of it.” The band also now limits their alcohol intake and how much they party while on the job. Of course, it hasn’t always been that way, but it’s been something they’ve learned to improve on. Noah reveals that initially, “We were just partying all the time and everyone was so tired. It’s not good for you; it really fucks you up after like a week. So now we’re like, if we have a day off, we’re probably out partying, but if we have a show the next day, then we’re pretty chill.” Zack mentions how there’s this expectation as a rock band that they would be partying afterward with the people they meet at the show, but the reality is performing is their job, and they have to treat it responsibly. Noah adds, “That’s the real thing. When you’re touring the country or Europe, and every city you’ve come for the audience, it’s their night out, so they want to go out and party. Like if you meet someone, they want to bring you out, they want to buy you drinks and stuff. But for us, it’s like a night on the job, so it’s kind of weird balancing it all, that’s for sure.”

The band is getting around the music scene in Austin, but it’s not precisely the case regarding food. They’re pretty busy, so they haven’t had much time to try new things, but something they can all agree on, and Robin could definitely testify for, is Domino’s Pizza. They plan to go for authentic Texan barbecue before they leave, as Zack’s friend from Austin reminds him every night about it. However, as the rest of the band may try barbecue, Robin may still choose Dominoes. Isak laughs and says in context to Robin’s statement, “No water, only pizza.” This reminds Noah of a funny incident with Robin in New York; Noah asks, “Can I tell them about the water thing?” Then continues to explain, “We were in New York, and we’ve been out for like four days. We were in the BNB, and Robin came out and was like, ‘Oh, you guys are drinking water?’ And we’re like, ‘Yeah, you want some?’ And he thought about it for a second and was like, ‘I haven’t had water in four days.’ He’s just been drinking beer, Redbulls, and Coke.” This is a lesson for everyone to stay hydrated. Traveling and doing events like these, people tend to forget to drink water, but it is crucial for you to do so.

Their song “Swimsuit” came out recently. In asking what the inspiration behind the song is, Noah explains that it is pretty introspective. He continues by saying, “I traveled back home for the first time since moving; I moved away after high school and didn’t come back. So, I went back there and sort of wrote for a couple of weeks. And “Swimsuit” specifically, is about survival skills.”  He doesn’t want to say too much since it is about actual people, but basically, he has some friends back home who are not doing great, so that’s what it is about. So go listen to “Swimsuit” now on Spotify!

This article is part of SCAD Radio’s SXSW collection, in which some of our radio members visited the music portion of the SXSW Festival and Showcase in Austin, TX.

Tahlia and Cahli met nearly five years ago in Adelaide, Australia at a music communitythat hosts a lot of workshops. Cahli explains that it is “a place where kids can go and learn howto write and produce music.” They were doing different thingsin the program until Nick, theperson in charge of the community, mentioned to Cahli that she would be a good match withTahlia. Shortly after, Tahlia and Cahli created “Teenage Joans”.

Vocalist and guitarist, Cahli Blakers, and vocalist and drummer, Tahlia Borg, as Teenage Joans. Teenage Joans self identifies as “Juice-box punk-pop.” After asking what they mean by that, particularly the “juice box” portion, it all started to make sense. Firstly, Cahli clarifies that the punk-pop label is simply, “playing pop music that is punk.” Secondly, the “juice box” element is what they describe as juice box lyrics, in a sense that their “lyrics always have an element of silliness, and almost childishness to them. Like nostalgia. We’re always trying to have fun with our music,” Cahli reveals. When listening to their music, it takes me back to high school grounds and the chaos that that environment brings.

As the duo is still quite young, just in their early twenties, a lot of their music has to do with their teenage years. In their EP “Taste of Me” both of their favorite song was hands down “Something About Being Sixteen” as it sums up the band pretty well, in addition to it being “a really good singalong song that shows itself; everyone loves it,” Cahli acknowledges.

Teenage Joans has a Spotify playlist called “Taste Of: Taste of Me” that includes songs that inspired their EP. In the playlist is a wide range of artists from Five Seconds of Summer to Lana Del Rey, to Taylor Swift, and so on. I asked the girls how they combine all those musicians into their music. Cahli starts off by saying, “Five Seconds of Summer is definitely our main influence; our joint influence. Then we both kind of stray a little bit. I have a definitely more pop influence. I love Taylor Swift and her songwriting. I think she influences my lyricism and stuff a lot.” Cahli continues by saying how she actually “started playing guitar because of Ed Sheeran.”Tahlia joins into the conversation by commenting how her taste in music is heavier and more pop-punk and emo. Some of her favorite bands are “Mom Jeans, Hot Mulligan, Movements, and definitely Five Seconds of Summer.” Cahli finishes off by saying “it’s like a mosaic. Just adding little pieces together,” in context to how the all their influences meld into the music they create.

This has been the first time the girls made it to the States but they’ve been touring around Australia before then. One of Tahlia’s favorite memories of their career so far is playing at a music festival inWollongong, Australia. The stage had a huge lazy susan spinning them around as they performed. Cahli’s favorite memory is when they played their first ever headline tour in Australia at the end of last year. She mentions, “We pretty much sold out every show and it was really wholesome. Such a beautiful, respectful crowd.

Their favorite place to travel has been Brisbane, Australia, until now. Cahli thinks their new favorite might be Austin, TX. She exclaims, “I love it here. We’ve been spending a lot of time downtown; it’s been really cool.” Tahlia adds, “Everyone’s super nice as well. And the weather, besides today, is really nice. And the air is fresh.” Additionally, the girls have been loving all the vintage shops around town and going to all that they can find, so much so that Cahli exclaims, “we’re just a vintage store now.” And their favorite thing to eat in town: TacoBell. They clarify, “we have it in Australia but just not in Adelaide where we live, so we love having it when we go to different cities.

Teenage Joans’ main bucket list item is to play with Five Seconds of Summer, but other than that they really just want to play music until they can’t anymore.
