The following is from a journal discovered in an abandoned home, 3 years after a zombie hoard took over Savannah.  The author remains unknown.

I.

Before Greg had to escape, he was in the process of securing the street.  He had managed to put up a fence and traps around his block.  A storm took out a tree, however, and it fell onto the fence.  That’s how a hoard managed to overtake Greg’s house.  There were too many of them for him to fight them himself, so he ran.  Regretted it ever since, he said.  But now that there’s so many of us, we can take them.

The plan requires us to lock ourselves in with the zombies.  So we broke up into teams.  One team will focus on repairing the fence.  The other will set the trap in an abandoned house.  The third team will focus on clearing Greg’s house.

Fence
Jacob
Kyle
Kush
Alicia

Trap
Gabrielle
Olivia
Antony
Cole

House
Greg
Ashton
Leon
Myself

The trap in the house is simple.  Once we retrieve a PA system from the station, we will hook it up to a small generator we found in the basement of The Bunker.  Gabrielle’s team will line the house with explosives, play music as loud as it can go, and get as far away from the house as possible.  It will attract most of the zombies to the house.  When the timing’s right, they will detonate.

Jacob, Antony and Leon have already left for the station.  They should be back soon.

II.

The sun was rising when we set out for Greg’s.  He lived far from The Bunker, in a newer home outside of Downtown Savannah.  It was a strange car ride, seeing all of the abandoned homes, the squares where all of the tourists used to be, thinking that this might be the last time I’d see any of this.

Greg had secured a large block.  The fence and traps stretched much farther than I expected.  He pulled over in front of the fallen tree.  Past the fence I could see zombies wandering.  One of them caught sight of us and ran.  Greg took him out easily.

We left Garret the Bot in the car with Jacob, Alicia, Kyle and Kush as they got to work on removing parts of tree.

Removing the tree was the hard part.  I heard the chainsaw in the background as Greg, Ashton, Leon and I headed for Greg’s house.  Gabrielle, Olivia, Cole, and Antony went straight for their house.  It was set farther back from the rest of the neighborhood.

Nearly every window in Greg’s home was broken.  Stepping inside, Leon and I took the second floor and Greg and Ashton took the first.
Greg had framed movie posters on walls of the hallway.  The kind you’d get from the movie theater.  The glass was broken, and they hung askew.

We found four zombies upstairs.  We took out three just fine, but the fourth was fast.  I found myself pinned to the wall, pushing the thing away from me.  I managed to shove it to the ground, but it got back up and lunged.  Losing my balance, I fell backward, against the broken window.  The screen fell out to the ground.  I grabbed onto the frame, thinking that this was it.  I was going to fall.

Leon came just in time, killed the zombie on the spot.  He helped me back to my feet, and the two of us joined Greg and Ashton downstairs.

They cleared the space and had moved on to the backyard.  Leon and I headed towards the shed.  Before Leon could fully open the door, a zombie jumped forward, knocking him to the ground.  I killed it before it could do any damage.

Greg’s house was clear.  We did a quick check to make sure none got back in, and stepped outside.

The fence team had managed to clear the tree and moved on to patching it up.  Kyle had opened the gate and drove the van inside.  Garret the Bot kept his paws on the window, perched, barking at everything around him.

We headed towards the trap.  Inside, Gabrielle’s team managed to take out the zombies.  Outside, however, others were moving towards them.  Greg, Leon, Ashton, and I stood guard.

I don’t know how much time had passed.  Everything moved so fast.  Finally, the fence was finished and they joined us.

Then the music started playing, and we ran from the house as fast as we could.  Antony stopped to get Garret from the car and we all reconvened at Greg’s house.  We watched the zombies wander towards the trap.  It was working.  I couldn’t believe it.

But then the music stopped, and we stood in Greg’s house in disbelief before any of us did something.  Antony perked up as if he heard something.  He set Garret down and ran towards the vans, out of our line of sight.

In the distance, we heard a car.  Then the opening of a gate.  We stepped out from the house, and saw a trolley barrel down the street and turn towards the house as Antony shut the gate behind it.  The trolley started blasting music as it crashed through the wall and through the house.

Michael and Liam then ran from the house towards us.  Antony joined them.    More zombies piled into the house.  Finally, Greg said that was the last of them.  Just as Michael, Liam, and Antony got back, Gabrielle detonated the house.

And that was it.

Liam said that he and Michael got halfway through Maryland when they said screw it.  They said when they saw that the station was abandoned, they drove around Savannah hoping to find us.  When they found The Bunker, Frank told him that we left.  He wasn’t happy about it.

We are finally back together.  Greg’s setup was still in working condition.  This is the first time I felt safe.

III.

Greg had prepared for a zombie apocalypse years ago.  He had a substantial stockpile already.  Many other homes in the neighborhood did as well.  We still break into teams every morning to gather supplies.  Kyle, Leon, Antony and Olivia are out right now.

There’s always someone on air.  Right now, it’s Kush.  I don’t know if anyone will read this.  But if you are, check us out.  Maybe we’re on our right now.

It’s comfortable here.  Or as comfortable as it can be.  Alicia hung a SCAD Radio sign over the fence.  It kind of feels like home.

I.

Jacob started filming again which is a weird comfort.  I don’t know.  When he wasn’t, it felt as if something was wrong.  Of course something is, but… it’s nice to have it back.  The chores around The Bunker is mostly cleaning, tidying and gathering supplies.  Every morning, a group sets out for supplies.  They don’t come back until late afternoon, sometimes with a wagon full of food, other times with just a bag.

The building used to be an office building.  It’s a historical, just like everything else in Savannah, and has a basement filled with old junk.  Most of it is useless, but there have been some good finds.  Old boardgames come in handy when no one could sleep.  It’s a good distraction.  We’ve found quilts and antique kitchen utensils.  Lamps.  If we were having a garage sale, we’d make a killing.

I was outside, taking Garret to the bathroom when I heard commotion from the front.  I picked Garret up and went to check it out.

I still can’t believe it.  I saw Kyle let Alicia in through the gate.  Of course, Jacob was there to catch it all on camera.

We brought her inside, and in the den, most of radio was finally back together.  Alicia was exhausted.  Once she sat down, all she said that she had a crazy story to tell us.

I’m going to try and retell it the best I can:

Back at the Hive, the hoard didn’t get to her like we thought.  Once we got separated, she managed to weave her way through the crowd of zombies and book it down to the back of the Hive.  In the gate, she saw a small opening that she could squeeze through.  Half way out, a zombie grabbed onto her foot.  She tried to fight it off, but could only do so much.  That’s when someone from the other side took her hand and helped to pull her away unscathed.

She said she realized that it was our Program Director, Misch, who rescued her.  We were all shocked to hear that.  When all of this began, we assumed she somehow played a roll in it.  It just sounded like something she’d accidentally would do.  We assumed she was dead.  Evidently, she’s not, according to Alicia.  It was good to hear.

Alicia tried to get her to rejoin the group, but Misch said she was in trouble, that she couldn’t.  Not wanting to say goodbye just yet, Alicia decided to help her.  As they ran away from the Hive, Misch explained to her what she was doing.

When the zombies took over Savannah, Misch heard of what she’d later learn to be a cult.  At first, she thought it was a coven.  She said she really liked the idea of a coven of witches surviving the zombie apocalypse.  It took her a week to realize that it was a cult, but at that point, they wouldn’t let her leave.

So, she had to sneak out.  She took what she could and managed to leave in the middle of the night.  These people are crazy, she told Alicia.  She thought they were a group of kitchen witches looking to find some sense of balance in this crazy world, but instead, they’re trying to find ways to control the zombies.  She yelled: this isn’t voodoo, Alicia!  That’s when Alicia paused and shook her head.  Misch is weird like that, she said.

They made it to the street when Misch saw a red pick-up truck.  She said they had to hide.  That’s the cult looking for her.  She failed to mention that the reason why she wasn’t allowed to leave was because she knew too much.  They hid in the bushes as the truck drove pass them.

Misch said that she took everything, except for one thing.  She forgot her grandmother’s watch at the house.  She was on her way back to retrieve it when she saw Alicia trying to escape the Hive.

Alicia tried to convince her not to go back, but Misch refused.  So, Alicia decided she’d help her.  They spent the next days trying to come up with a plan.  The house was guarded and there’s always a handful of members at there.  But at night, it was pretty quiet.  The guards weren’t professionals, so they usually fell asleep at their post.

A week had passed and they finally felt they had a strong enough plan.  Well, truthfully, Alicia said they had a strong plan for a while but just kept pushing it off because they were nervous.  Either way, they were going to go through with it that night.

They snuck down the back alley and climbed a large tree before the guard came outside.  Misch is terrified of heights, so Alicia said it was interesting.  They sat in the tree until the guard fell asleep in his chair.  That’s when they moved.  There was easy access from the tree to the second floor balcony.  They carefully opened the door and made their way into the house.

Misch’s room was a mess.  After she left, the cult turned the room over, probably searching for some clue as to where she could’ve gone.  Fortunately, Misch had hidden her watch under a loose floorboard.  She’s paranoid, like that.

Leaving was a different story.  As soon as they stepped out of the room, they ran into a member of the cult.  Her name was Renee, and she had shared the bedroom with Misch.  The three stared at each other in shock.  Alicia said she thought they were done, that this was it.  Her first thought was: I’m supposed to die in the station, not here.

But Renee remained silent, and just stepped aside.  Alicia and Misch quietly left the house, and climbed down the tree.  Once they made it to the ground, the back light turned on.  Spinning around, they saw the cult leader standing in the doorway.  She yelled at them, called on the other members.  They chased them.  One of them got in their truck and cut them off at the end of the alley.

They turned the corner and hopped a fence.  That’s when they discovered they were in the middle of a yard filled with zombies.  They ran, hopped the fence again, directly in front of the truck.  The driver slammed on the breaks, nearly hitting them.  Alicia and Misch didn’t have time to stop.  They kept running as a hoard of zombies followed them, bringing down the fence with them.

They found their car parked on the corner.  Quickly piling into it, Misch and Alicia managed to get away from both, the cult and the hoard.  Eventually, both stopped chasing them.

Misch took Alicia back to the station.  That’s when they saw that a hoard overtook it.  Misch said she knew of a place called The Bunker.  She could take Alicia there.

When they were parked out front, Alicia tried to get her to come with her, but Misch refused.  She said the cult won’t stop chasing her.  It’s okay, though, she said.  She said she was going to try and start that coven.

So, Alicia got out of the car and Misch drove off.  She’s having fun, Alicia said.  We believe her.

I still can’t believe she’s back.

II.

Greg said that he compiled a sizable stash of supplies.  We have been gathering our own too.  If we pooled them together, we’d have enough to go off on our own.   We’re going to be leaving soon.

We’re going to have a station again.

The following is from a journal discovered in an abandoned home, 3 years after a zombie hoard took over Savannah.  The author remains unknown.

I.

We woke up in the middle of the night to Garret the Bot.  He stood at door, barking and growling at the dark.  I tried to call him back, but he ignored me.  He scratched at the door once, then incessantly.  He sensed something was wrong.

I picked him up and we cautiously stepped out from the attic and down the stairs…

From the window, we could see a hoard of zombies clawing at the gate, pushing it.  It leaned with them.  It was close to breaking.

In a frenzy, we gathered what we could.  I picked up Garret and we all grabbed a pack of supplies.

The gate fell with a loud crash and they flooded the parking lot, taking the SCAD Radio sign with them.  Banging at the window of the station, one of them managed to crack it.  It spread across the large window pane.  We barely had time to bring what we needed before the glass shattered.  They scrambled into the station.   We slipped out the back before any of them could get to us from the inside.

They were all over the parking lot.  We moved into the dorms to hide from them.  A few had made it into the rooms from the windows.  I could hear them banging on the other side of the locked doors.  We snuck out from the back.

They hadn’t wandered to this part of the parking lot yet.  We threw our bags over the fence.  Leon was the first to climb.  When he made it to the other side, I slipped Garret through the bars to him.  Then the rest climbed over the fence.  I was the last.

Savannah always took on a different personality at night.  But now, with the streetlights out, it was unfamiliar.  Jacob switched on his flashlight, and we started walking.  We didn’t know where to go.  Gabrielle mentioned the building we saw earlier on Bull.  It was our best shot.

I don’t know how long we walked.  It took longer than it would’ve before all of this happened.  Down Broughton, most zombies were inside the buildings.  The few outside lunged at us, but we were able to stop them.

It was difficult in the dark.  Garret squirmed in Leon’s arm, trying to get out.  But we couldn’t lose him again.  Not in the dark.

We finally found the building.  A generator hummed in the background.  We saw a single light was on from the window.  Someone was definitely home.

Leon yelled hello.  We all joined him.  But there was no answer.  We saw a figure in the window, but it moved away.

Garret wiggled out of Leon’s arm.  He jumped to the ground, trotted behind us.  He started to growl and bark.  In the distance I saw movement.  I took Jacob’s flashlight and saw a hoard moving in our direction.  We banged on the fence, shook it, yelling.  The hoard was getting closer. Too close.

Then the front door swung open.  We could hear an argument coming from the building.  One person didn’t want to let us in, but the one at the door did.

That’s when we realized the one who wanted to help was Kyle, our former GM.  He ignored the other man and ran to the gate, quickly letting us in before the hoard got to us.  We helped him push the gate shut and held it there while he locked it against the zombies fighting to get inside.

He told the man at the door that he knows us.  He’ll vouch for us.  The man just grumbled and walked away.  His name’s Frank.  Kyle said that he’s like that with everyone.

Frank was the one who started this place.  He called it The Bunker.  The people there were mostly tourists.  The one Savannah local was a man named Greg.  Kyle told us that he was the best cook in The Bunker.

Kyle took us to the room serving as a den.  He said it’s nice here.  Everyone does their part and there’s no issues.  That’s where we saw our Events Coordinator, Kush.  They asked us where Alicia was.  We didn’t know how to tell them.  It was easier saying that Liam and Michael left.

Garret the Bot was a big hit.  Frank loves dogs, apparently.  Kyle showed us a spare room.  We set our things down and settled in for the night.  We were told that they all get up at 6 to start their work for the day.  We don’t care though.  I’m just glad we have a place to sleep.

II.

I was talking to Greg today.  He said that he was big on radio back in the day.  He even had a set up in his shed back home.  He had to leave it all behind when a hoard took over.  That’s when he wound up here.  I called Ashton over and we told him how we wanted to set a broadcast up.  Get SCAD Radio going again.

He said that he’s been wanting to go back to his house and reclaim it.  It had been in his family for years.  He never really wanted to leave it behind.  If things go well and we gather enough supplies, hopefully we can set out soon.

This is the first good news I’ve gotten in a long time.

The following is from a journal discovered in an abandoned home, 3 years after a zombie hoard took over Savannah.  The author remains unknown.

I.

We’re good on food, for once.  We set up camp fire out by the pool and have been taking turns.  Production Assistant Leon is a good cook.  I know it’s all just from a can, and we don’t really have any seasoning, but I don’t know.  It’s just better when he cooks.

The DJs staying at the station decided to leave.  I couldn’t blame them.  They packed up and said goodbye.  I hope they’re doing well.  They were scrappy freshman.  They probably are.

It’s been quiet…

I hung the flag back up.

II.

Every now and then we hear bird calls from the parking garage.  We want to respond, but none of us know how to call back.  We know morse code, though.  One night, we asked Bird Up if they were okay.  They said they were.  It’s good to know.

We lost power today.  I’m surprised it lasted us this long.  Web Guy Antony said that it’s the perfect opportunity to have the coffee creamer.  None of us wanted it.  But he enjoyed it.  I guess that’s what matters.

Ashton said that there’s no way we could get our broadcast working, now.  But maybe we could find some place that could.  I know we can’t stay at the station forever, but we don’t know what lies beyond it.

III.

Leon went outside to check on the gate and came back with a dog.  He said saw him wandering by the pizza place across the street.  It’s a Pomeranian.  We think he’s purebred, but none of us are authorities on dogs.  He had no tags, so decided to name him after our number one fan on SoundCloud, Garret the Bot.  Leon said that sounded great.  I agree with him.

We gave Garret the Bot the toy minion we had laying around the station.  He loves the thing.  Carries it everywhere he goes.  It’s half his size, but he doesn’t care.

We started playing fetch with him, or as best as he could play fetch.  We’d stand outside by the pool and toss the minion.  He’d pick it up, bring it back to us, but lay down.  He doesn’t understand.  A lot of small dogs don’t.

But he really likes to chase birds.  He’s fast for his size.  We’ll be outside, checking on the gate and we’d see a small ball of fur zip pass us after a bird.  He yaps too.  We could do without that.  But things have been so grim around here, that we’re not complaining.  He’s a good dog for the most part.

IV.

We found a dorm that was left unlocked.  We took some books, ramen, pillows.  We didn’t take everything partly because it felt weird, but also because we don’t have much space in the station.  We’ll go back as needed.  We took the comforter though, and a blanket for Garret the Bot.  We bunched it up so he could have a place to sleep in the attic with us.

V.

I haven’t been able to write all day.  A lot had happened.

We were outside trying to play fetch with Garett when he got loose.  He saw a bird and went after it when we weren’t looking.  Jacob found a small gap in the fence that he must’ve slipped through.  He focused on patching the hole while we talked about what we should do.

Ashton said that it wasn’t worth the risk to go after Garett.  He was right.  Even though we all loved the dog, it was too risky to go after him.  But Music Director Gabrielle and her assistant Olivia wanted to, as well as Leon and Video Editor Cole.  Antony was still asleep in the attic at the time.  We didn’t think to wake him up.

When Jacob returned, he said that he wanted to go after Garett too.  So it was decided then.  We took the last trolley across the street.  It would be easier than on foot.
With Ashton driving, we left the station in search of Garett the Bot.  We were about to head down Broughton when Jacob remembered he didn’t have his camera.  He wanted to turn back, said that this would be good for the movie.  We refused, so he sulked in the back for a fifteen minutes.  We stopped trying to talk to Jacob about the movie.  Every time, he’d just say, “You know.  It’s a movie.”

It was the first time any of us had been downtown since it all began.  Broughton was a mess.  There was broken glass, clothes and furniture spilling from the window.  A few zombies shuffled down the street.  We were able to take care of the ones that approached the trolley, but not many tried.

Down Bull was an old building with a tall, intimidating fence.  A large American flag hung from one of the windows.  The trolley slowed to an unwanted stop.  Before any of us could check what was wrong, Olivia saw Garett.  He was running down the street, after a bird.  Without hesitation, Leon nearly leaped out of the trolley in pursuit of Garett.  The two turned the corner and disappeared behind a building.

Within seconds, Leon was running back with Garett the Bot under his arm.  He was yelling at us to start the trolley.  A hoard of zombies appeared behind him, catching up.  The trolley wasn’t cooperating.  Ashton tried and tried as Leon got closer, but the thing wouldn’t start.

Leon leapt back into the trolley with a panting Garett.  Gabrielle shut the door behind him as the hoard closed in on us, banging on the side, prying at the door.  Leon set Garret down who ran towards Olivia, as he leaned up against the door to keep it from opening.  Jacob, Cole and I managed to shove some way from the windows, but they were getting too close.  There were too many.  Clawing at us, snapping at us.  The trolley finally started and Ashton pulled away from the hoard as fast as it could go… which wasn’t that fast, but it was enough.

We all fell back into our seats as we drove down Broughton.  The hoard began to chase us, but a loud bang in the distance distracted them.  They turned and headed in that direction while we got away.

Garett was unfazed.  He jumped off from Olivia’s lap and into an open seat, leaning out the window the way dogs do.

Half way down MLK, the trolley began to slow to a full stop.  We could see the station from where we were.   We could easily walk it, but we saw a hoard gathering across the street.  We had to be quick.

We hopped out of the trolley.  I held Garret under my arm as we made our way down the street, trying to move fast, but remain under the hoard’s radar.

I could hear them from across the street.  They sounded awful, snarling.  I turned and saw them move in our direction.  They were slow at first, but they picked up.  Soon we were running, booking it down the hill and towards the station.  Garret squirmed under my arm, uncomfortable.  But we were so close.  One of them tried to reach towards me.  I felt it grab my shirt, but Jacob grabbed my hand and pulled me faster, out of its grasp.

We made it to the station, securing the gate behind us just in time.  The hoard piled up outside of it, banging, sticking their arms through the bars and trying to grab at us.

We piled inside, out of breath, exhausted.  I sat Garett down and he ran straight for his minion.  I sat on the ground, laid on the cool tile.

We heard Antony yell where were we from upstairs.

The following is from a journal discovered in an abandoned home, 3 years after a zombie hoard took over Savannah.  The author remains unknown.

I.

The Hive is swarming with them.  They’re taking furniture out from the lobbies and throwing them into the courtyard.  I asked Content Director Liam why they’re doing that, but he just shrugged.  Said he didn’t know.  I think that might have scared me the most.

I saw someone in the parking garage at the Hive.  They just paced back and forth.

We’ve managed to secure Tannex.  The students are gone.  It’s just Radio, here.  District, Manor, Port City Review, and Honey Dripper found other places.  We’re not sure where they went.  They asked us to come.  They wanted us to.  But Alicia said she was born in this station, and she’s going to die in this station.  She’s the General Manager.  It’s not our place to question that.

Production Director Michael showed up with everything needed to set traps along the gate.  We didn’t question it, either.  It just seemed like something Michael would do.

There’s a lot of us here in this small space.  The Music Department is clearing out the attic space so that we’ll have some place warm to sleep.  We got rid of most things, except for the giant blow-up swan.  Alicia said we should hang it up outside as a flag.  It could be a beacon of hope.  Let people know that we’re alive.  That they haven’t taken the station yet.

I worry, though.  We tried to stock pile as best as we could, but we’re art students.  We have mostly paint.  None of us are painting majors, but we have a lot of paint for some reason.  We compiled a make-shift pantry in the Administrator’s office.  The only thing left in the fridge is a carton of coffee creamer.  Web Guy Antony says that we should save it as a treat.  We keep telling him that it’s not milk, but I don’t think he understands.

Maybe he does.  Maybe he just doesn’t want to believe it.  We’re all in denial.

II.

Content Director Liam says that it’s suicide to stay at the station.  There’s a hoard across the street at the Hive. It’s only a matter of time until they come for us.  He wants us to leave.  He says he has a plan, but won’t tell us what it is—he’s secretive that way—but if we want to live, we need to leave here.  Leave Savannah.

I agree.  But when I look at our little station, I can’t bring myself to leave.  Like what GM Alicia said: I was born here, and I will die here.

It’s getting late now.  Our food is running low.  The Family Dollar across the street has been ransacked.  We sent Music Director Gabrielle, her assistant, Olivia, and Video Editor Cole to scavenge.  They returned with off-brand markers and a roll of toilet paper.  Both useful, but neither are food.

Production Director Michael said that we need to go to the Hive and find food there.  It’s our only hope.  But GM Alicia doesn’t want us to.  Michael said that he will come up with a plan.  I hope he will.

He left after that.  Said he knew a guy.  We asked his assistant Leon who that was, but he just shrugged.  He said Michael knows lots of guys.  It’s been about a day since we saw him.

III.

GM Alicia hung up the inflatable swan outside off of the security gate.  She wrote, “SCAD Radio” on it with one of the markers.  It looks awful.

I saw the figure in the parking garage again.

IV.

Michael came back today with a trolley filled with explosives, and everything we’d need to take on the hoard.  We didn’t question any of this.  It just seemed like something Michael would do.

We’re going to sneak into the Hive tomorrow.

V.

The team was made of Production Director Michael, Content Director Liam, Music Director Gabrielle, GM Alicia, and myself.  Camera Guy Jacob wanted to document it.  Liam tried to convince him not to, but Jacob didn’t listen.  He says it’s for the movie.  We gave up asking what movie.  It’s like Web Guy Antony and the coffee creamer.  Let sleeping dogs lie.

We left a handful of the DJs at the station.  The management assistants, Olivia, Leon, and Ashton are in charge.  The DJs tried to come, but they’re what will keep SCAD Radio alive.  Ashton is working on getting our broadcast back up.  We need them there.

Michael said these zombies would be distracted by sound.  I hoped he was right.  He put our PA system in a trolley filled with explosives.  Blasting Metallica, we sent the trolley down Turner Blvd and straight into the Hive.  When the hoard got close, Michael detonated the trolley.  Took out most of them.

Inside the Hive, I saw “THE NEST” spray painted on the parking garage.  It was hard to see if the figure was there.

We were able to get into the Hive.  The kitchen smelt awful.  Most of the food went bad.  We took what we could and filled the wagon with it.  A hoard started to build outside of the cafeteria.  A few made their way inside.  We managed to thwart them, but outside, it was another story.

They were everywhere.  There were much more than we have anticipated.

We lost GM Alicia.  We almost made it out, but she tripped.  Her fanny pack unhooked in the chaos.  She had filled it with mace, mints, and a deck of playing cards she claimed to be good luck.  But the weight must’ve been too much.  She didn’t realize that it had fallen off.  I saw her trip.  The others pulled me away before I could get to her.  I tried…

We were surrounded.  I thought this would be it.  Even Jacob stopped filming.

Then, out of no where, the Bird Up DJs descended from the parking garage.  They saved us.  They said they set up shop in there because it seemed cool.  And honestly, during these times, that’s enough explanation for me. They managed to keep the zombies from leaving the Hive area.  They said they were mostly students in that hoard.  They think that maybe, they just didn’t want to leave. We tried to bring the three of them with us back to the station, but they said we’d just hold them back.  They were probably right.

They secured the gate behind us and we made it back to Tannex. Without our GM.  The first thing I saw was the inflatable swan, the sloppily written SCAD Radio…

I get it now.

VI.

I woke up in the middle of the night.  Made my way down to the lobby and saw Liam and Michael packing up.  They said they couldn’t stay here.  It wasn’t safe.  They were going to head north.  They had a plan, but of course, Liam wasn’t going to share it.  He’s like that.  I said goodbye, and watched them leave in a trolley.

I noticed that the inflatable swan had fallen to the ground.

Loving begins quietly. Mildred and Richard sit on a front porch of a Virginian home. She tells him she’s pregnant, he says that’s wonderful. Against the backdrop of a deeply divided United States, Loving continues this way: quietly and sweetly. Following the true story of the Loving’s and their court case that led to the Supreme Court declaring anti-miscegenation laws to be unconstitutional, writer/director Jeff Nichols makes sure to maintain the focus on the husband and wife.

This is where the film succeeds: the love between Mildred and Richard is palpable on screen due to the brilliance of Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton. Negga has a serene strength as Mildred, while Edgerton’s Richard is reserved and determined. Their deep respect for each other carries the film. When she speaks, he listens. It’s beautiful to watch. It is this that overshadows the injustice of the laws; by the end, you’re happy for them, not simply the country.

But, perhaps, Loving is too sweet for its own good. The stakes are high—we all know this—yet it’s not felt. It’s easy to fall in love with Mildred and Richard, and their personal happiness is the priority, but for such a monumental case, the action takes place outside of the court. And while Loving finds its ground in this, it lacks a bite. Either direction would make a very different movie. Keeping it quiet, however, can be justified in a single line: Richard to attorney Bernie Cohen (Nick Kroll, who is simply fine), “Tell them I love my wife.” Loving is not complicated. It’s about a man and a woman who love each other. It’s quiet, romantic, and for the lack of a better word, lovely.

Christine, written by Craig Shilowich, directed by Antonio Campos, and starring Rebecca Hall is, simply put – unsettling. The power of the film comes from the story and the mythos of news reporter Christine Chubbuck. A quick google search of the woman would show you who she is, but as Shilowich has said, in just 5 short sentences. Chubbuck worked for a small news station in Sarasota, Florida and quickly rose to infamy—reasons for which, I will not mention. If you know of Chubbuck, the movie offers an explanation. If you do not, I would suggest going in blind. Either way, Christine will be a film you won’t stop thinking about.

Rebecca Hall treats the material with care and responsibility. Christine is a 29-year-old woman: intelligent, passionate, and determined. On the verge of a larger market, she desperately wants to break through and find success. Hall excels at grounding Chubbuck. What could have been a sensational character is a woman no different from you and me. While the film lulls at points, Hall’s performance holds it together as every small moment, every interaction comes crashing forth.

Christine is a gloomy character study, a slow burn, building and building dread until its final moments. While quiet and subdued, it leaves a lasting impact. For years, Chubbuck’s story existed on internet listicles, just a few sentences not at all attempting to tell her story. The beats of the story—Christine’s interactions, her struggles, her work—are rather ordinary, and may lose you in the second act. However, there is something very beautiful about Christine. It pays specific attention to character, to the affect we have on others, to how our perceptions of others are not always true. It is a wonderful example of character and the power of story in modern filmmaking. That being said, it is probably a movie you can only see once, because Christine Chubbuck will be burned into your memory for a long time.
